Court: Foreign National Facing Deportation

March 31, 2017

Appearing in Magistrates Court today [March 31], a 54-year-old Filipino national who was found working without a work permit was remanded into custody, with the Magistrate recommending that he be deported.

The Court heard that Ernesto Vandong remained in Bermuda after his permissions had expired, and engaged in gainful employment during that time.

As read in by the Crown Prosecutor, Immigration records showed that in 2012, Vandong had left Bermuda on an flight but had returned shortly after. There was no subsequent record or indication of Vandong’s departure.

Officials investigated the matter, and found him working in a St David’s auto shop. The Court heard that as soon as Vandong spotted them, he stopped working and walked away from the car that he was working on.

However, after his arrest, Vandong admitted that he had overstayed and was working without a work permit.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded him into custody, noting that the offence was one that can result in a deportation order.
