The YAO Babe Ruth 13-16 year old baseball division opened up today [April 22] with a double header which saw the Cubs defeat the Marlins 5-3, and the Angels defeat the Cubs 5-4.

Cubs defeat Marlins 5-3

Cubs defeated Marlins 5-3 thanks to a strong pitching by Riley Rego and Sam Resnik. Resnik led all pitchers with 6 strikeouts and no walks over 3 innings. Micaiah Furbert led the Marlins with 5 strikeouts.

Marlins captured the lead in the first inning. Cubs took the lead for good with three runs in the first inning. Liam McCue, Jaden Malpas and Rego each drove in one run to lead the Cubs. Marlins collected seven hits. Daniel Exell and Billy Montgomery each collected multiple hits for Marlins.

Angels outlast Cubs 5-4

It came down to the last play, but the Cubs were on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to Angels on Saturday. The game was tied at four with Angels batting in the bottom of the sixth when Ingelman Matt singled off of McCue Liam, driving in the winning run.

Kaelin Paynter and Liam McCue battled back in fourth in the final innings, with Paynter striking out 4 and McCue striking out 7.
