Court: Edwards Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter

May 8, 2017

Appearing in the Supreme Court this morning [May 8], Kiahna Trott-Edwards pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 16-year-old Shijuan Mungal, and was remanded into custody until her sentencing on May 19th.

In August of last year, the Court of Appeal for Bermuda “set aside the conviction and sentence” of Ms. Trott Edwards, who was previously convicted of  murder. She faced a retrial, and this morning she pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

Speaking at a court hearing last year, the mother of three had said: “I wish I had reacted differently. I never intended to hit Shijuan in his head. I did not intend to kill him.” She broke down in tears, and said “I truly am sorry. Everybody’s life is changed.”

During the first trial the jury heard from a number of witnesses, the bus driver operating the bus where the incident started, Mr Mungal’s friend who was with him when the altercation took place, as well as from the defendant herself.

The Court heard that Mr Mungal and a friend were on the bus — as was the defendant and her child — and words were exchanged with the defendant asking the teen to stop using profanity. The defendant and her child got off the bus, as did Mr Mungal and his friend at the following bus stop.

An altercation then occurred outside the defendant’s home, with the defendant striking the teenager with a wooden baseball bat, causing fatal injuries.
