Harbour Swim Club Partners With Dellwood
Harbour Swim Club, the largest and oldest swim club in Bermuda, has formed a new partnership with Dellwood Middle School to promote swimming in the community and to give new swimmers the chance to train in a club environment.
Through the creation of a bursary scheme, Harbour is working alongside Dellwood Middle School teacher, Bryce Williams, to identify those who participate in the school programme who would benefit from this opportunity.
Williams stated, “The partnership with Harbour allows our school swimmers to develop and fuel their love for the sport while benefitting from the generous bursary programme put in place by the club’.
Harbour President, Stephen Castree added ‘By increasing the number of people who have access to a club environment we can broaden the swimming base in Bermuda.
“Swimming allows children to develop a plethora of skills including teamwork, organizational skills, commitment and focus. By placing academic achievement and swimming commitment as requirements to participate in the programme, the opportunity is clearly there for a child to develop their academic and sporting skills side by side’
The first swimmer to benefit from the programme has been selected and all involved hope to see this flourish in future seasons.
Outside of Bermuda Harbour swimmers recently put in extremely promising results at Carifta and at a meet in Canada designed to offer development to some of the up and coming swimmers. Additionally, a group of over 20 seniors travel to Naples, Florida later this month.
In the UK, Emma Harvey, a long standing Harbour member, who now trains at Millfield School recently participated in the British Swimming Championships which included several Olympic and World Championship medalists.
Harvey placed second in her age group in one event and her performances have led her to be selected to represent Scotland in the upcoming Youth Commonwealth Games.
Head Coach Shona Palmer stated, “Emma’s performance is the tip of the iceberg in terms of her capability and she has been working to achieve this level for several years. We look forward to following Emma’s continued development into the senior ranks of International swimming.’
Harbour continues its growth of both social and competitive swimmers and in the 2017-18 season will add further swimmers and coached sessions.
Tryouts for new members will be held on Friday May 12th. Interested swimmers should contact Ally Harvey at acam@logic.bm for further information.
What a wonderful idea. Congratulations to Dellwood, Mr Wonderful Williams and Dellwood. Bermuda punches high at swimming. Bet we see some real success here.
