“Their local knowledge and connections are a tremendous asset to the project and we look forward to working with them.”
A spokesperson said, “This is the latest round of contracts to be awarded to local construction and supply companies, with six major contracts awarded in May of this year to Brunel, IAL, OBMI and Onsite Engineering. A further four contracts were previously announced in April, awarded to Bermuda-Caribbean Engineering Consultants, D&J Excavation, and Correia.
“The redevelopment of L.F. Wade International Airport is being implemented under a Government-to-Government framework agreement between the Governments of Canada and Bermuda.
“In terms of the agreement, Bermuda Skyport Corporation Limited will oversee the overall development and implementation of the project, and the Canadian Commercial Corporation [CCC], through a subcontract to Aecon, will deliver the construction component of the project. ”
Update 7:40pm: One Bermuda Alliance Chairman Lynne Woolridge said, “The One Bermuda Alliance is pleased to see the Airport project taking off with jobs and opportunities for Bermudians.
“The four major contracts, eight subcontracts and 50 new Bermudian jobs announced today are among the first steps of a major project that will sustain hundreds of Bermudian workers and their families for years to come.”
Finance Minister the Hon. E.T. [Bob] Richards had this to say about today’s developments:
“Bermudian jobs and business opportunities will continue to grow as this project takes shape.
“This is the kind of direct support to Bermudian workers and their families that the political opposition to the project dismissed.
“I would like to thank my colleagues in the One Bermuda Alliance who kept to the wicket to make possible the kind of progress that will help Bermudians move forward together, not back.”
“On behalf of the OBA, I would like to extend congratulations to the contractors who’ve taken advantage of the tendered business opportunities.
“They will be part of a 21st Century project to support the working life of the Island. It is one more way we are making it possible for Bermudians to build together for something that benefits us all.
“The Air Terminal construction is expected to take 40 months to complete.”
Good news for sure, but it is still a bit disingenuous … is the work for a week, a month, a year? Also, the overall value of the contracts would be useful, I know they cannot give the individual amounts but, again, the detail is important.
It is important to know this kind of detail in order to properly assess the economic impact locally.
Without it, this is, in effect, a poorly disguised political advert in favour of the OBA ….
Red Rose, You obviously have no idea what is involved in building a large facility like the new airport so don’t politicize the announcement by asking how long it will take. The huge amount of concrete required for the taxiways alone will take months and then you have the reinforced concrete ground beams that will tie in all the piles presently being driven plus the erection of the structural steel and concrete floor slabs. Read the whole article: it’s a 40 month project and at a minimum, 50% of this time will be spent coming out of the ground. This isn’t an OBA advert so stop trying to politicize everything.
Imagine that! They said there would not be many locals receiving contracts for the airport deal.Looks like alot of local contractors
to me.
More Bermudian firms..
I wonder if any of the unfortunate ones that have been unemployed and have gotten employment via this contract would like to express there thoughts on the new airport!!
Well done to all..
