Student Turns Personal Project Into School Effort
After being given the challenge of building a Sierpinski Pyramid last year, Purvis Primary student DaShawn Vickers has seen his initial effort turn into an art project that has encompassed the entire student body, leading him to win the People’s Choice Award at the Annual Primary School Art Show this year.
A spokesperson said, “Last year, as a primary four student, DaShawn Vickers was given the challenge of building a Sierpinski Pyramid to help channel some of his energy. To develop his concentration, every triangle had a pattern that had to be coloured before the triangle could be constructed.
“DaShawn was excited and he set himself the goal to create a structure taller than himself. Many people, both inside and outside of Purvis helped him to decorate his triangles. Unfortunately, at the end of the school year, the structure was just shorter that DaShawn, who had also grown during this time.
“Upon his return to Purvis in September of 2016, DaShawn decided that he wanted to continue the project to reach his goal. This project now became a school project as the primary six students calculated how many triangles DaShawn would need, and every child and teacher in the school coloured at least one.
“The entire student body was thrilled when DaShawn won the People’s Choice Award for the portion of the Sierpinski Pyramid that was submitted for the Annual Primary School Art Show this year. On June 23rd, the completed pyramid was unveiled at Purvis Primary’s Award Ceremony.”
