Sports Minister Congratulates Butterfield & Smith

September 12, 2017

Minister of Social Development and Sports Zane DeSilva extended his congratulations to Bermuda’s triathletes Tyler Butterfield and Karen Smith who both competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee this weekend.

Tyler finished 7th overall, crossing the line in a time of 3:56:22, while Karen Smith finished 15th in the women’s 45-49 age group.

Minister DeSilva said, “I am extremely pleased to celebrate the success of Tyler and Karen. They are an inspiration to people of all ages and show that, with hard work and dedication, athletic excellence can be enjoyed for many years.

“Tyler became Bermuda’s first ever professional triathlete in 2002 and was voted Bermuda’s male athlete of the year on more than one occasion since then. In 2013 he finished 9th in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and now, several years later, he has beaten his 2013 position by two places finishing 7th in that same competition.

“Karen has also been one to watch in the triathlon world in recent years; I recall her 2014 win in the Female 45-49 Age Group in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championships.

“I hope that their fantastic results will inspire our youth to follow in their footsteps.”
