1 Hour Video: Halting Rise Of Obesity & Diabetes

January 16, 2018

[Updated] The Ministry of Health is hosting a public presentation on “how Obesity and Diabetes are impacting our community”, with Jane DeVille-Almond as the guest speaker, and if you were unable to make it, you can tune in to the live broadcast below.

“Obesity and Diabetes are our most serious public health challenges and a significant factor in chronic ill health in Bermuda. It will take all segments of our population to commit to changes to halt the rising trend in these conditions,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry recently launched a public consultation on the proposed implementation of a sugar tax, and the consultation document states, “Bermuda’s prevalence of obesity and diabetes is one of the highest amongst the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, 34.4% of adults are obese and 12.2% have type 2 diabetes.”

“The cost of diabetes care over the next 10 years is estimated to be $26 million in health insurance claims alone, excluding out of pocket payments, the impact on other conditions, wages and hours of lost work.”

Update 7.36pm: The live video has ended, and the 1-hour replay is below.
