Mirrors To Host Student Art & Digital Competition
The Minister of Social Development and Sports Michael Weeks announced that the Mirrors Programme will be hosting its 2nd Annual Student Art and Digital Competition – Bermuda: Our Community.
The competition is open to any student enrolled at a local public or private school for the 2017/2018 school year. There may be only one entry per student. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, June 27, 2018.
The exhibit will be on display at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art from July 6 – July 25, 2018. The public will have the opportunity to cast their People’s Choice vote for their favorite submissions during this time.
“We were thrilled with the level of participation from schools for the first art and digital competition which was hosted in conjunction with Mirrors’ 10-year anniversary events in 2017,” said Minister Weeks.
“Over 100 submissions were received for the competition. Students did a fantastic job of artistically expressing Bermuda’s cultural symbols, way of life, and neighborhoods.”
Programme Manager for Mirrors, Mrs. Kimberley Jackson echoed the Minister’s enthusiasm saying, “It was inspiring to see the talent of Bermuda’s young people and their ability to express through art what Bermuda means to them.
“I am looking forward to seeing the talent that this year’s competition uncovers. We didn’t receive any digital submissions last year.
“We are hoping that the inclusion of group submissions for this component of the competition this year will encourage participation in this area of the competition. I would like to thank Masterworks for partnering with us on this endeavor again this year.”
Tom Butterfield, Masterworks Director said: “Masterworks is delighted to host the exhibition organized by Mirrors. The spirit of the Mirrors mission lies at the very heart of Masterworks’ aspirations.
“From the inception of our Foundation, the belief was, and is, that through the visual arts, the human spirit finds an outlet for expression and creativity. By directing this energy in a positive direction, the result is the innovative, inventive artworks submitted into the Mirrors competition.”
The focus of this competition provides students the opportunity to reflect artistically what it means to them to be a member of our community, including but not limited to our way of life, our people and our neighborhoods. Winners will be notified after the exhibit has closed on July 25th and People’s Choice voting has concluded. Prize giving for the competition will take place mid-September.
