“Few Measures” Before New Bus Joins Fleet

March 8, 2018

The new bus which arrived on the island in January is not yet on the roads as “there remains a few measures to be taken before the bus joins the fleet.”

On January 16th, the Department of Public Transportation took possession of the new bus after the vehicle was cleared by the Customs Department and released to a DPT team.

The new bus after it came off the dock in January:

Bernews asked if the bus was on the road, and a Government spokesperson said, “No. There remains a few measures to be taken before the bus joins the fleet.”

The Government is aiming to rebuild the bus fleet, saying it “is a priority for this Government as we support public transport and are committed to a reliable, efficient and well-used service,” and the 2018/19 Budget had $3 million allocated for the purchase of eight new buses.

It’s been here two months. Did it arrive in kit form?

If it takes this long to get a new bus on the road, I think we can see why maintaining the older ones never happens.

  2. skeptic says:

So a custom built bus is unable to be put to work for 7 weeks and counting as it requires “measures to be taken” ??

    • Micro says:

It’s bigger than even the last buses. I recall them saying drivers need retraining and some areas probably need widening. I really don’t understand why successive governments haven’t entered into a contract with a vendor to build and supply a homogenized fleet of buses built to fit the islands roads and traffic patterns.

This would provide enhanced reliability, safety, and every bus being built exactly the same way using the same parts, makes things a lot simpler than what we have now.

    • wahoo says:

What do you expect? This government took 6 months to build a bus shelter (that is three walls and a roof on a slab of 60 sqft.). It took almost the same amount of time for them to learn that a contract was a binding agreement and not cheap to get out of, it took them 4 years and five “protests” to convince people that the OBA were bad people, it took OJ 50 years to get his high school certificate and you are complaining about a bus?

      • Micro says:

Yup. Watched a W&E crew sleep and lounge around all day yesterday from about 10am to 3pm outside the My Lord’s Bay Road gate. Idk what work they’re doing there, nothing at all was done.

        • wahoo says:

They have no shame how can they stand, sit and even lay down while taxpayers are driving past? I know what you are talking about I saw it. The unions are creating a bunch of spoiled children do you recall the ferry driver caught for crashing a ferry full of passengers while intoxicated? He did not get fired! These are the same people that the unions and by extension the plp call out to strike and march when something does not go their way.

  3. sage says:

She’ll be costing about $750,000 by the time they’re done.

  4. Ty says:

Because the specs of the bus is that it is too big for our roads – but the PLP (sorry GOVT) will find a way around that.

That was stated by your Minister of Transport a while back on the ZBM evening news.

    • Zevon says:

So they bought a bus they can’t use. Oh great.

  5. Onion Puke says:

Come on Onion Drivel- enlighten us on how this is the OBA’s fault.

    • Coffee says:

This bus was custom built to transfer Americas Cup VIP’s ….

Micheal Fayhe’s prints are all over this pink and blue box !

All part of Grant Gibbons AC master plan

      • nerema says:

        More stupid PLP lies.
You can’t help it can you.

  6. Family Man says:

I guess the five new buses they’ve budgeted this year represents a whole year’s worth of work for the DPT.

How are the new fiscally prudent schedules coming along?

    • nerema says:

They are thinking of setting up a committee to look into the possibility of discussing those by 2028.

  9. Spanner breath says:

Bunch of jokers, minister needs to go ASAP. There all phantoms now, prior to election alota b.s. ing now don’t hear or see unless taking a photo.

    • wahoo says:

Just the minister? Where is Burch? I like him but he has to grow a set and get this sorted. The unions have created a monster of people that feel and are unaccountable for mediocracy. All of us are paying taxes to support this.

  10. Stevie says:

DPT waiting on a replacement part. Due here by Christmas next year.

Ho Ho Ho, Just you wait it will be the best replacement part you have ever seen! I will shove it in your stocking and you will love it!

  12. facts of the rock says:

the plp are the biggest bunch of morons I have ever come across in this world.

  13. Triangle Drifter says:

$350,000 for a city bus! Absolute insanity! Google Hino or Hyundai city buses. Have a look in alibaba & see the multitude of city buses which are stock, not custom, ready to drive & a whole lot cheaper. Better still, there are dealers here already representing these builders. No need for half of PTB going on travel junkets to factories.

  14. Just a suggestion says:

Not taking any political party sides. The bus/s where ordered under the old government. Due diligence was not followed hence why the newer models are slightly longer/wider and this was never noted. The current government are changing legislation to allow the newer models on the road. However to amend and allow this new fleet they must also make amendments to prevent other vehicles ie trucks not to fall within this bracket. I fully get the current administration past certain legislation as soon as the election was won. Thats the scary part. 14 days for a minister to over see the gaming commission less than 21 to apply to revoke SSM. Why not as quick to amend the road traffic regs? Is there a real reason?

  15. Kevin says:

Now I’ve heard it all ….I thought ” Custom Built” means built to your specifications ……who would order buses that are “too Big” wow come on folks
You can’t make this Sxxt up
