56 BOM Volunteers, Students Travelling To India
A team of 56 volunteers — including 38 students — from Bermuda Overseas Missions will be travelling to Banglaore, India this summer.
“This is the largest group we have ever taken and a testament to the enthusiasm of our volunteers to participate. We have several families joining us this year which is also a change,” said David Thompson, President of the Bermuda based charity.
“Of the 56 volunteers, we have 38 students who attend local schools such as CedarBridge Academy and Berkeley Institute as well as mentoring organizations such as Beyond Rugby which is part of the Family Centre.
Mr. Thompson said that in the summer of 2017 the charity visited Mulanje, Malawi, Africa with 32 volunteers. Of this group 24 were students and they successfully constructed four homes for needy families in 2 ½ weeks.
“To help fund the student portion of the trip costs we have embarked on a number of fundraisers and to date have held two car washes, a tag day and Rotis sale. On the 13th April 2018 we have organized an island wide grub day at the schools with many business participating with their own denim day to support us,” he added.
Bermuda Overseas Missions has been taking students on trips to different countries working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity for the past 16 years and have organized over 21 trips to different countries constructing homes for more than 100 families and taking over 500 volunteers.
BOM are also planning a fall trip in October and looking to return to Haiti to continue their work with Feed My Lambs Orphanage in Montrose, which is operated by Bermudian Philip Rego.
Thats very good, this type of experience shows our concern for those less fortunate then us and the appritiation for where we live.
Keep up the good work.
