Video: New BPS Commissioner Steve Corbishley
[Updated] The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] holding a press conference this morning [June 21] to introduce Steve Corbishley, who will be succeeding Michael DeSilva as Commissioner of Police of Bermuda.
Last month the Governor announced that Mr Corbishley — who served with Kent Police in the UK — would be the new Commissioner of Police, saying the appointment was “made following an open recruitment process in line with international best practice for selecting Chief Officers.” We will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video of press conference is below.
Update: The live broadcast has ended, and the 22-minute live video replay is below:
Update: Speaking today, Mr Corbishley said, “I am delighted to be in Bermuda. And I’ve spent the last week engaging with staff, speaking to front line officers and supervisors, understanding their views and their needs in regards to the Bermuda Police service and making it the best it can be. I’ve also had opportunity to speak with Government, Government House about some of their expectations and some of the challenges that we face in going forward.
“I have extensive experience in policing in the UK with the National Crime Agency and indeed overseas. And I come to Bermuda excited to take on the role and to be able to offer my experience in leading this exceptional service in going forward.
“I want to work with local people, but particularly I want to work with local communities. I want to listen to their concerns. Listen to what they need from the Service to ensure that they’re safe, and that they feel safe, and to deal with some of the challenges that they face, whether they be antisocial behavior, drug use, organized crime, or indeed anything that requires a service of the police officers and staff under my command.
“I look forward, when I start office at the end of this month, to speaking with staff and also other colleagues about the plans we need to put in place in going forward.
“The Bermuda Police Service is not unique to other police services around the world. The challenges we face in regards to cybercriminality, serious and organized crime, and child protection are issues that we need to recognize, and issues that we need to address.
“We already have significant expertise within the service to deal with these issues, and I will support and enable them to become even better in tackling some of those issues. And importantly, is to work with partners who can greatly assist in addressing some of these problems.
“I’d like to take some questions from you in regards to my role and to how I plan to go forward, but I’d like to end in regards to saying that my welcome to Bermuda has been absolutely amazing. My family will be joining me for my time here, and they, too, are looking forward to being part of the local community.”
Clean Sweep Part 2.
Only thing I hated about Clean Sweep was Stop List got bigger and when they got too close to higher ups, they booted Coxy boy.
The only thing? It was a farce which did nothing to stop drugs. Let’s make alcohol and cigarettes, the worst killers, illegal and clean sweep those involved.
Typical, says all the things You all wants to hear. Don’t watch, his words judge his actions. Be wary of a man with all the answer he will end up with all the gold…….. (wait, that happened already)
” Be wary of a man with all the answer he will end up with all the gold”
careful, your plp overlords might come after you for that.
He is “excited to lead this EXCEPTIONAL service going forward”…..so tell me, if this service is exceptional and was led by a Bermudian, WHY was there a need to fill this post with yet another foreigner?
We (the local higher ranked police officers) have the experience, the academic qualifications and the street smarts and I am VERY disappointed that a Government who swore to put our people first, have now turned their tongue to recruit an Englishman (or any other nationality)
Who will he learn from?….a Bermudian
As long as you’re a Colony, just deal with it.
Stay in Costa Rica Juice.
Did you apply?
I don’t think he had all the answers but I am concerned about him trying to throw questions back to the media already. I am also concerned that he believes that all is well in the force. From what I’ve seen most of the officers in the police are yes people and tell those in authority what they want to hear. Ironically if what he is saying is true about how great the officers are then why is he needed. This is simply more of the same.
Communication a priority???
What about the pepper spray nonsense??
Hmmm….
No communication there!!
We will all learn , in time, who this man is!!
dont be stupid and type without thinking and show everyone that you really are stupid!
HE WASNT HERE FOR THAT INCIDENT!
He has nothing to do with “the pepper spray” incident. Lmao. Why should he communicate about it. They r lucky it wasnt rubber bullets or teargas which is the norm in other duristictions. Had that one tool not cracked the cop with the umbrella none of it would have happened anyway. They all went there looking for a confrontation and guess what? They got exactly what they asked for. Ask the plp to communicate abt it as it is entirely their fault.
I agree fully they got what they went there looking for. Rev Tweed and his boys were the instigators they should have been in the front to be peppered spray first. Instead they send in the elderly to take the licks. SMH nothing bot trouble makers and now you do not hear from they. Bet you can’t guess why???
The Peoples campaign have long been aware of who gave the pepper spray order as does that show but do not have the courage to step up to the mark
Tweed a man of god with scruples?
Wait you want Bermudians?! Wasn’t it two Bermudian Senior Officers that sent that unit called PSU to the House of Assembly?
Hoping he can lock up Onion Idiot aka Juice
The man is just saying nice and polite stuff until he takes over (which is fully appropriate). Give him a chance and let’s be positive. The Governor and Government (who will have been consulted extensively as it’s a political hot potato) have decided that he is the right person for the role and that a Bermudian is currently not available. Let’s move on from politicking this and support him and the BPS in sorting out our current issues. Who leads is less important than what is achieved.
