‘Will Not Disseminate Report Cards In December’

December 17, 2018

Saying it is in “response to feedback,” the Department of Education advised parents that they “will not disseminate report cards this month,” and “the next steps in relation to the reporting of grades and the implementation of Standards-Based Grading will be communicated to parents in January.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Education is focused on ensuring quality teaching, learning and improved outcomes for our students.

“In response to feedback from key stakeholder groups inclusive of the Bermuda Union of Teachers and School Principals, the Department of Education advises parents that we will not disseminate report cards in December 2018.

“The next steps in relation to the reporting of grades and the implementation of Standards-Based Grading will be communicated to parents in January 2019, after we finalize with stakeholder groups, the way forward for both of these critical matters.

“The Department of Education remains committed to working collaboratively with Principals, Schools and the Bermuda Union of Teachers to improve the outcomes of students in the Bermuda Public School System.”

Earlier this month, the Bermuda Union of Teachers President said, “Teachers are confused on standards based grading and, therefore, the grades that have been entered have not been as accurate as they need to be. Standards based grading was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“The ways in which teachers have arrived at a grade has varied from school to school due to the lack of training around standards based grading. Parents have expressed great concern over teachers not being able to explain this new way of grading and has left them utterly confused.”

School Principals, via the BPSU, had also expressed concerns about the “continued upheaval resulting from the implementation of the Standards Based Grading system.”

  2. Living in paradise says:

Goodness sakes, using the hyfalutin’ word ‘disseminate’ in the wrong context is just poor . . . report grades, hand out grades, provide grades: there are many better and more accurate ways to state the situation.

Don’t say anything peeps.. It’s a set up.. They might ‘sick out’ again…

  4. Ignorant Minion says:

They marched, protested, argued and made all sorts of accusatio0ns about the OBA. They had all the answers…the platform, the agenda, the answers, the great plan, the money…and no what. OMG what went wrong.

Did the PLP mislead the voters? Did they lie? Where they oblivious to the real issues surrounding the M.O.E.? Or are SOME of the teachers, the hiring standards and / or unions the bigger crutch. The unfortunate truth is that The PLP or OBA are not strong enough to tell the truth. they love the votes and power more than the truth. telling the truth and letting the cat out of the bag would certainly mean …loss of votes…and loss of power. If BOTH parties agreed to get rid of the dead weight and hire only QUALIFIED teachers then we could expect more. You have teachers educating our youth that claim that they cant figure out how to use the new software / grading system?! WFT?! Anyone else scared for the future of our youth! Disgusting!

The answer likely lies somewhere between the MoE and the BUT, with the MoE being most responsible. However it’s up to Govt Ministers to dig in and solve things on behalf of the people of Bermuda. For the reasons you suggest, retaining power and not upsetting the apple cart, they’ve failed miserably… their only contributions being canned soundbites.
