‘Discuss Possible Cannabis Research Institute’

February 19, 2019

Premier David Burt had a meeting with Chief Medical Officer of Canopy Growth Dr Mark Ware to “discuss the possible establishment of a Cannabis Research Institute in Bermuda.”

Yesterday, Premier Burt tweeted the photo below, saying: “Met with @drmarkaware, Chief Medical Officer of @CanopyGrowth to discuss the possible establishment of a Cannabis Research Institute in Bermuda. He will be discussing Medical Cannabis at a lecture this evening at BUEI, and I encourage persons to attend if they are interested.”

Last night Dr. Ware hosted a presentation on ‘Medical Cannabis: Insights into a Shifting Landscape,’ which the pre-promotion said would provide an “overview of the changing access to medical cannabis and share current and emerging trends.”

According to the company’s website, Dr. Ware is “responsible for the advancement of research and Spectrum Cannabis, Canopy Growth’s global medical cannabis brand.”

“In April 2014, Canopy Growth became the first cannabis company in North America to be publicly traded,” their website notes, saying they have a “vision is to be the number one cannabis company in the world” with “a commitment to drive the industry forward, and above all else, providing medical and recreational cannabis consumers the best possible experience.”

Speaking at the PLP Delegates Conference last year, Premier Burt said, “Though the government has allowed doctors to prescribe medicinal cannabis, there is currently no way to import it as Bermuda is only allowed to legally import one gram of cannabis for medicinal purposes per year.

“Now, the government can apply to the United Nations to raise the import limit, but our thinking is, in a country that’s desperate for jobs, why send money overseas to import what we can produce here.

“In 2019, in line with the pledge made in our platform, the government will begin issuing licences for domestic medicinal cannabis production.”

      Such a very simplistic statement.

        Such a complex reply.

It is cause at this time I’m tired of repeating myself and other people. I have on here, under different handle, laid out what I think the Government should do and I don’t feel like repeating it yet again so I went with the clear and simple route since its such a tough and confusing topic for some people.

De-shedulize it. Cannabis should be kept out of the hands of greed driven former staunch prohibitionists who are lining up, pushing over-reaching, unnecessary regulations and costs, designed to wrest control away from those who ensured, under duress, that the plant didn’t go extinct during the ongoing war on some drugs. Trickle-up is the way to go, self-regulating cottage industry model. If only we were trendsetters rather than followers.

  2. Simple but true.I agree just legalise it.
    Tax it’s sale.
I would gladly pay that tax!

    • sage says:

To tax something you are currently wrongfully destroying people’s lives over is beyond preposterous.

  3. Here we have peace and loved it and love❤️ and taxable…this is found money!

  4. Most importantly it is timely…and apparent.

  5. Dawn Keebols says:

This is straight forward and complete.

Why are we still talking about it?

This is our choice…I haven’t any request to any entity to decide for me…

Our numbers are equifiable to the point of…talk is over…we want this and that is that!

When I want your opinion or any such indulgence…I will ask it from you.

  6. Question says:

If you use it for recreation don’t expect the rest of us to pay when you have health problems. You’re on your own.

  7. Real Deal says:

Please also include stem cell research.
