Multiple Arrests After Incident In Southampton
Police and ambulance personnel responded to a disturbance early this morning [Feb 2] at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club which resulted in six people hurt and at least six people arrested, according to police, who have used their authority under the Liquor Licence Act to order Southampton Rangers to close from 10pm Saturday, February 2nd until 10pm Sunday, February 3rd.
A police spokesperson said, “Around 3am today [February 2nd] police officers and ambulance personnel responded to a reported disturbance at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.
“Initial information indicates that several men were involved in an altercation on the premises.
“A 23-year-old man and a 32-year-old man were transported from the scene via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not considered to be life threatening.
“The 23-year-old man was admitted to hospital for further medical assessment.
“Three men said to be 24, 25 and 30-years-old respectively – believed to have been involved in the anti-social incident at Southampton Rangers Sports Club – arrived at the hospital in a private car for treatment of their injuries while a fourth man, said to be 21-years-old, also attended the hospital separately for treatment.
“After receiving medical care, all four men that attended the hospital of their own accord were arrested in connection with this incident. The driver of the car that transported three of the injured men to hospital – said to be a 27-year-old woman – was also arrested.
“In addition, a 32-year-old man was subsequently arrested in connection with this incident.
“The five men arrested remain in police custody at this time pending further inquiries, while the one woman arrested has since been released on police bail.”
Superintendent James Howard, who is in charge of the Tactical Division, said, “Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. The public expect a robust response from the police where the conduct of certain individuals causes or is likely to cause significant harm.
“Our focus of activity will therefore reflect this and we will respond to incidents of anti-social behaviour where vulnerability and or a high risk of threat or harm has been identified. If this is the case, then liquor licenced premises can expect to receive an order from me authorising the closure of their premises.
“I am hopeful that the closure will allow the management of any establishment to use the time to review any incident, in addition to improving security measures.
“The Bermuda Police Service is willing to assist should that be the case.”
The spokesperson went on to say, “As a result of the early morning incident, the Bermuda Police Service is using its authority under the Liquor Licence Act, Section 51A to close Southampton Rangers Sports Club from 10pm Saturday, February 2nd until 10pm Sunday, February 3rd.
“It is imperative that liquor licenced premises take ‘social responsibility’ for the safety of their patrons and the conduct of those persons who threaten that safety, which has a profound effect on the community that they are a part of and Bermuda as a whole.
“The Bermuda Police Service will continue to respond to any anti-social behaviour linked to liquor licenced premises with all of our law enforcement options – which includes but is not limited to – the temporary closure of offending properties.
“Liquor licenced premises must ensure that the anti-social behaviour of a few does not affect the responsible socialising of the many responsible patrons.
“Any witnesses or members of the public with relevant information regarding this incident are urged to contact the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
About time too. This particular club has been the scene of or close to numerous shootings, stabbings and other serious events. It’s beyond me how the licensing authority haven’t taken their license off them already. Too busy trying to make money than worry about who they let drink in their bar.
So lets see how consistent the police area. Docksiders closed for a day after what most people would say was non incident involving guests at a private party. there were no injuries and no arrests …lets see how long will Rangers be shut down for. Something tells me not a single day!
So is there going to be a football game tomorrow?
The games will be at PHC field at the same times.
mamma’s byes need a cut @$$
If Docksiders had a 24 hour ban….. Rangers should get 3 months!
If they don’t get a ban, someone has some ‘splaining to do.
So 24 hours shut down?
this club is a disgrace and a total blemish on the fine folks of Southampton. the so called management committee needs to deal with the rubbish that infests their club. i do not know of any positives out of the clubfoot some time, lately it is all negative
Seriously, please close this club.
How much more? Time to stop the ‘oh they do wonders for the community’ nonsense.
we’ve all had enough
Close the bloody place down
You know it’s all the OBA’s fault ? HAHAHAHA
They need to close them longer than that. They also need to close earlier then 3am….why does a sports club need to be open at that hour in the morning?
But I thought they had prayer vigils after the last ruckus?
How could it possibly happen again after that?
Yes how could it? More prayer’s please!!
Yeah lets close the place for the bunch of jokers on this website hiding behind their computers who don’t support it anyway! That’ll change things for sure.
For all that can’t read
A 24 hour closure was immediately enforced by SI Howard.
My opinion is this, South P Rangers have no control or regulation of membership. Average Joe can walk up tomorrow and become a member
This shows the current admin at the club takes money over reputation.
Don’t close the club, not even by 1 hour
Ban all liquor sales and consumption on premises for 48 to 72 hours or prevent private function hire. This eliminates all the excuses
Step up committee
