City of Hamilton Election To Be Held On May 9th

March 27, 2019

[Updated] The Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling is holding a press conference this afternoon [March 27] regarding developments concerning municipal reform. We will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below.

Update: The live broadcast has concluded and the 51-minute replay is below

Update 5.41pm: A City spokesperson said, “The Parliamentary Registrar has announced that the Municipal Election for the City of Hamilton will be held on Thursday, May 9th, 2019.

Hamilton Mayor, Charles Gosling, said, “This is an important time for the City. Eligible business rate-payers are urged to exercise their democratic right and ensure they are registered to vote in the upcoming election. The battle to preserve the electoral process in the municipalities is ongoing but a strong voter turnout will speak volumes. The rate-payers shouldn’t be forced to settle for taxation without representation and there is no representation without registration.”

“Registration for the Business-rate-payers is not automatic. The deadline to register to vote or to change Nominees for Owners and Occupiers of commercial properties located within the municipality will close at 5pm on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019. No registrations or changes to the register will be accepted after this date. If business rate-payers have not registered by this time, they will not be afforded the right to vote. Registration forms can be obtained from the Parliamentary Registrar’s office in the Craig Appin House on Wesley Street.

“Those businesses that were registered to vote in the 2015 municipal election are encouraged to confirm their registration with the Parliamentary Registrar’s office by visiting their website at www.elections.gov.bm under the Municipal Elections heading or by calling their offices at 293-VOTE [8683]. Business rate-payers must ensure that their nominee appointed to vote on their behalf will be on island on May 9th [Polling Day] in order to vote.

“The City’s Resident rate-payers are automatically registered to vote if their name and address appear on the Parliamentary Register as resident in the City. Anyone who has recently moved to the City or residents that have turned eighteen since the last parliamentary election should be sure they are on the register with the correct information.“

Well, what a level discussion and disclosure of how the corporation works. It does not appear to be the oligarchy that government would want us to believe. I think that they are being more than fair to offer discussions with the same government that have sought to to discredit the corporation and see it torn down.
