Man Arrested After Barricading Himself In Building
[Updating] A man has barricaded himself inside a building on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke, and when police officers initially attempted to approach him, he “threw an unknown corrosive substance at them,” and the police remain on scene and an “ambulance and Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel are also on scene as a precaution.”
A police spokesperson said, “Around 10:30am today [March 28th] police officers were conducting checks in the area of the former Prison Headquarters building on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke, near the junction with Curving Avenue, when they encountered a man who barricaded himself inside the building.
“Officers initially attempted to approach the man, who threw an unknown corrosive substance at them. No officers were injured.
“Ambulance and Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel are also on scene as a precaution. Currently negotiations are underway with the man and further updates will be provided in due course.”

Update 7.25pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 6:10pm the 69-year-old man was finally detained without incident after police officers entered and conducted a search of the building – following extensive negotiation efforts – with no report of any injuries to the man or the officers involved.
“The man is expected to be charged with trespassing, assault on police and willful damage and is currently in police custody.”

This was a challenging incident dealt with professionally by the BPS involving a clearly vulnerable person. Our intention will always be to ensure the safety of any person irrespective of offences they may have committed. The incident was resolved safely and I commend the highly skilled officers from our Tactical Operations department who led this matter to a positive conclusion.
