Court: Man Sentenced To 8 Years For Rape
[Written by Don Burgess]
A man was sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape of a teenage girl he committed 30 years ago.
Morris O’Brien, 53, was convicted of the crime earlier this year. The crime occurred when O’Brien was 23, and the victim was 15.
The court heard how O’Brien, who was known to the family, had knocked on the door of the home, then stuck his foot in the door to prevent the victim from closing it. He then forced his way into the house and then raped the woman on the living room floor while her sister slept upstairs. The woman’s parents were not home.
In handing down his judgment, Justice Carlisle Greaves said the woman had to suffer through “tremendous harm.”
The Justice added that because he was close to the family, he had a “responsibility” to help protect her “but instead he betrayed that trust and took advantage of it to the detriment of the young lady,” and handed down the eight year sentence.
