Final Town Hall On Living/Minimum Wage

May 14, 2019

The final Town Hall meeting to discuss a Minimum/Living Wage for Bermuda will be held at 6.30pm on May 16th at the Somerset Cricket Club, the Government said today.

“The public will be aware that for the past three weeks, the Ministry of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports has hosted a series of meetings to seek public feedback on the creation of a Wage Commission and the establishment and implementation of a living/minimum wage,” a spokesperson said.

“This follows the tabling of a report by the Parliamentary Joint Select Committee [JSC] last year on The Establishment of a Living/Minimum Wage Regime.

“Thursday’s final meeting will feature the following panelists:

  • Chairman of the JSC, Rolfe Commissioning, JP, MP
  • Director and President of Island Restaurant Group Ltd., Philip Barnett
  • Statistician Cordell Riley
  • Lawyer Philip Perinchief; and
  • Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert.

“Members of the public who are unable to attend the meetings and wish to provide comments and feedback about the establishment of a Living/Minimum Wage can do so by visiting The Citizens Forum at forum.gov.bm.

“There individuals can review the Establishment of a Living/Minimum Wage Regime report and offer their feedback in the fields provided.

“The Ministry takes this opportunity to not only thank the panelists for providing their time and expertise on the matter, but also to thank all those who have attended the meetings thus far. Those who are able, are encouraged to attend the final meeting and be a part of the conversation.”

they might hear you , but they will not listen

    • Onion Juice says:

Nobody wants to address why we have minimum/ living wage issues.
Some people still have the mindset of having people work for free.

      • gustav says:

        that BS
        nobody is working for free
yes , some of the evil foreigners are working for less than any Bermudian is willing to work for , but NOT for free.
so , lets ban all foreign companies , kick all foreigners out
        and everything will be good.
government will hire all Bermudians and pay all of them at least BMD 70,000 per year
        ( ironie off )

      • Joe Bloggs says:

Who OJ? Who still has the mindset “of having people work for free”?

        • Onion Juice says:

Those who hire people to walk the dog, clean house, wash car, take children to ballet, football games etc, wash clothes, cook food, run erands and Lord knows whatever else for $10 an hour.
And dont forget the cheap labour construction workers, farm hands and chefs.
Even though they get a pay (which is insulting considered to Bermuda’s standard) and probably no benefits its not far from working for free.
          Need I say more.

          • Double S says:

You have yet to say who works for free? So yes you need to say more.

            • Onion Juice says:

Hey Dipstick, I didnt say anyone works for free, I said some people have the MINDSET of having people work for free.
But I guess you and your fellow imps endorce low paid workers by elite undeserved privileged employers.

              • Question says:

It’s just another way the PLP making Bermuda more expensive. They tax food, tax imports, increase healthcare costs, and now they want to make sure home-grown food and services cost more.

          • Joe Bloggs says:

OJ, I have to ask. Do you you actually live in Bermuda? Have you actually met anyone who works for $10 per hour?

If you are referring to domestic help you need to factor in the value of free accommodation and free food into the pay packet. That is more than 60% of most people’s pay. So if that is what you are referring to, the actual taxable emolument is about $55,000 to $60,000 per year. Not a bad income given that there is no educational requirement.

            • Onion Juice says:

Thats BS, give me my $55,000-$60,000 in my hand, thats the same narrative about Slavery, they lived on de Plantation, ate on de Plantation(well they grew the food), looked after the Plantation owners children and even breast feed them.
But they had shelter, food and clothing.
Like I said, some people still have the same MINDSET!!!!!!!!!!
              F@#ing PATHETIC.

          • Student says:

I would do that for $10 an hour do you realise how many teenagers would work for that much after school or during the weekends. The main problem I believe is cost of goods. I have an internship at a company and I dont want to be at risk of the government drastically raising the minimum wage to where they say ok we will hire 5 interns this year instead of 10 or 12

  2. wahoo says:

What is the point of a living wage if we are killing the economy?

    • Onion Juice says:

I agree, I go to a tool store to get a power drill I pay $600, but go online and its $150.
And there is no sugar in the drill.
      LMAO

      • Double S says:

To lower the prices you first need to lower a retailers biggest cost which is labor. If they do that then your will shine about that. I bet you have never ever ran a business in your life. Dare to get off your ass and try being a maker instead of a taker. Bet you wouldn’t last.

      • Onion Juice says:

Guess I hit a nerve, everyone talking about crime but who are the criminals.
        REAL TALK

      • Question says:

You have a free choice. Don’t buy it if you don’t want it. It’s not like healthcare, where the government won’t lift a finger to reduce costs, and you have no choice. Or pensions that we pay for and now they want to take away from us.

  3. Joe Bloggs says:

After listening to this morning’s news on the radio, I now understand that the “Town Hall meetings” are a sham. Rolfe Commissiong has said categorically that there WILL be a Wage Commission and there WILL be a minimum wage that WILL include even hospitality service (tipped) staff.

The inclusion of hospitality service (tipped) staff will require a radical re-think of the way all restaurants, bars, hotels and clubs in Bermuda price their products and pay their staff.

  4. Concrete says:

That is not entirely true. Austerity only provides more profit it has never been proven to lower prices
