Theresa May Steps Down As Party Leader

May 24, 2019

British prime minister Theresa May has announced that she will be stepping down as leader of her country’s Conservative party on June 7, opening the door for an election to choose a new prime minister.

A BBC story said, “Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

“In an emotional statement, she said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and it was a matter of “deep regret” that she had been unable to do so. Being prime minister had been the “honour of my life”, she said.

“Mrs May said she would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place. It means she will still be prime minister when US President Donald Trump makes his state visit to the UK at the start of June.

“Mrs May announced she would step down as Tory leader on 7 June and had agreed with the chairman of Tory backbenchers that a leadership contest should begin the following week.”

A Guardian story said, “Theresa May has bowed to intense pressure from her own party and named 7 June as the day she will step aside as Conservative leader, drawing her turbulent three-year premiership to a close.

“Speaking in Downing Street, May said it had been “the honour of my life” to serve as Britain’s second female prime minister. Her voice breaking, she said she would leave “with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love”.

“The prime minister listed a series of what she said were her government’s achievements, including tackling the deficit, reducing unemployment and boosting funding for mental health.

“But she admitted: “It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit.”

“May’s announcement came after a meeting with Graham Brady, the chair of the backbench Tory 1922 Committee, which was prepared to trigger a second vote of no confidence in her leadership if she refused to resign.”
