OBA: Will Premier ‘Censure’ Minister Burch?

July 25, 2019

“When will the Premier publicly censure David Burch over a series of offensive remarks that undermine the status of Minister,” Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier has asked, while the PLP said Mr Cannonier is “focused on manufacturing controversies and seeking to make his virtually defunct organization relevant.”

Mr. Cannonier said, “Lt. Col. Burch has dismayed us all with his regular use of misogynistic remarks like telling my colleague Pat Gordon-Pamplin that she carries the water, his pejorative use of the words like ‘Indian’ in reference to our Chief Justice and recently he used Parliamentary privilege to try and undermine an independent Senator.

“He has criticized his fellow Bermudians saying in the House that his countrymen had “evolved into self-centred, selfish and uncaring public who look to the Government to solve all of their personal issues up to and including changing their diapers”.

“As a Minister he should be held to a high standard but he consistently falls below that.

“Is this the kind of behaviour the Premier wants to see from his Ministers? Is he happy that a Minister has deliberately attacked his fellow Bermudians? The Premier should tell us where he stands. By being silent we have to assume he not only condones this kind of behaviour but agrees with what is said.”

In response, a PLP Party spokesperson said, “While the only Premier to resign from disgrace Mr. Craig Cannonier is focused on manufacturing controversies and seeking to make his virtually defunct organization relevant, the government is focused on doing the people’s business.”

  1. Kim Smith says:

I would bet that the Premier will not speak to the Minister about the nonsense he put forward as fact in his comments about Grand Atlantic… but I stand to be corrected… and, in fact, hope to be.

    • Jill says:

I would BET CRAIG IS THE WORST PREMIER BDA HAS EVER HAD. He’s even the worst Opposition leader with his track record. The circus likes keeping him as leader because every act needs a clown to make us laugh.

      • Question says:

Burt is too much of a pansy to say anything to Burch. He’s an incompetent and weak leader.
That’s why the PLP never do anything right. This week they screwed up the Immigration reform, for the second time this month. They’re amateurs running around pretending to be leaders.

      • 2woke says:

” The circus likes keeping him as leader because every act needs a clown to make us laugh.”

        Hence…the plp

    • Onion Juice says:

Did you CENSURE SpongeBob when he called PLP “Sons of B!+c#€$!!!!!!!!!”
And you stormed out of an interveiw when you were asked tough questions.
      LMAO

“He has criticized his fellow Bermudians saying in the House that his countrymen had “evolved into self-centred, selfish and uncaring public who look to the Government to solve all of their personal issues up to and including changing their diapers”.

No fan of Burch in the slightest, but he does have a point with his above statement.

    • Toodle-oo says:

But the very people he’s leveling that accusation at don’t even know it’s them he’s referring to !
They will all say he’s a straight shooter or ‘for real’ or straight up etc and they’ll all rush to the polls and vote for him again all the while he chases away the people we need to bring foreign currency to the island so we can survive.

      • Onion Juice says:

Yes we need foreign currency, but we aint gonna be treated like $#!+ for de mighty dollar, like you do to nannies.

        • Question says:

According to Burch you’re a slacker who wants the government to change your diapers. He has a point there.

        • truthertz says:

Haha. You don’t even realise that Burch is talking to the likes of you with that comment. Hahahahaha.

      • Kimberley Smith says:

Sounds remarkably like Trump and his supporters.

    • Toadinthehole says:

So it is ok for a minister to criticise his own people like yhis?

  3. Ruth says:

That’s a great response from the PLP! Boom!

  4. dick francis says:

He won’t but he should, the silence says everything

  5. Perhaps forced to resign says:

might be more appropriate given his offensive and very deliberate comments. There is nothing “progressive” about his approach.

Mr. Burch is not a good example for Bermuda’s youth.

    Just that simple.

  6. JohnnyB says:

These politicians are literally acting like children.

  7. Sister Sister says:

Thank you Mr. Cannonier. He just have been spoken to alooooong time ago. He is out of order to say the least.

  8. sandgrownan says:

Nope, Burch serves a purpose. He can whip up the racial hatred and Bitcoin Dave can have some plausible deniability. Burch can do the dirty work (because he’s shameless) and Burt can keep him at arms length. Burch is nothing more than bully and coward.

Besides, Burt is too busy buying votes in St. Geo.

  9. Bill says:

    David Burch……PLP’s Donald Trump!

  10. Paul says:

Burch, will always get away with his disgusting remarks.

  11. Ringmaster says:

Burch is the potty mouthpiece of the PLP and says what the PLP Cabinet and MP mindset really is. He’s a nobody in the real world. It’s best to ignore him.

  12. just about right says:

o like how Dunkley censored Bob Richards for calling ppl SOBs?

  13. Toadinthehole says:

    He should but he won’t

  14. Potato Juice says:

Hasn’t been told to do so yet.

  15. Truth says:

Jet Gate Opposition Leader you have a nerve to talk. LOLOLOL

    • Right says:

      I know right?

    • Toadinthehole says:

Lol! Plp MO … deflect deflect deflect…. boring predictable tactics to avoid answering the issue

  16. wahoo says:

The reply from “a spokesperson” is insulting to all Bermudians on many levels but the fact that the premier himself did not reply is truly worrisome. His silence tells us that he either condones the disgraceful behavior or that he does not have the backbone to reprimand the minister. The spokesperson needs to tell us what the plp are doing because we see no signs of the people’s business being done.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Sorry Wahoo, that will not happen. The Lt. Col. speaks to a core of PLP supporters and he will not be muzzled. He is getting out the message to a certain segment of society and that is his job (or part of it).

Craig, why do you ask such silly questions?

  17. jobs says:

Well you don’t have to secound guess him calls it like he sees it Craig is full of fake verbal diarrhea

    • Toadinthehole says:

At least craig does not attack his own people!

  18. puzzled says:

You get what you vote for.

    Enjoy the twilight few years.

  19. Pangaea says:

Is the word ” Sorry” being a word having a baseless meaning.

I like my father never forgive any one for that which offends me.

Read on you will see why.

For me I define the word sorry as an expression of bereavement at the loss of a loved one.

How many times have you be offered the word sorry as a meager compensation for a wrong doing.

There are times when a verbal apology is just not good enough, this is when financial compensation must take president, that works in the court room !

Just before Christmas time, when I was a small boy I was blamed for an accident which was not of my doing .

My mother took me to the other boys house and made me offer an apology all I could say at the time was,” I am sorry “, my mother then handed me two of my Christmas presents and told me to give them to the little boy .

That day I suffered the ultimate humility which to this day I will never forget.

  20. 2woke says:

“this is when financial compensation must take president”

Awesome! I accept US cash only. When will you be sending it?
