Bermuda Optimist Sailors Competing In Canada

August 21, 2019

The Canadian Optimist Nationals resumed with five sailors from Bermuda — Ava Adams, Sophia Dias, Laura Hupman, Amelia Lewis and P.D. Rodrigues — in action.

All five sailors, who will also represent Bermuda in next month’s North Americans in the Bahamas, have been in Ottawa since last week, hoping for strong finishes in a field of 120 sailors.

The first day of racing saw only two races before the day was called due to a lack of wind. At the end of that day Adams sat in 8th position with Lewis in 11th.

Due to being across the start line, Rodrigues, Hupman and Dias finish the day in 58th, 59th and 67th respectively.

With winds consistently between 13 and 15 knots, racing resumed and Team Bermuda excelled with numerous top 5 finishes including 1st place finishes for Hupman and Adams.

At the end of the day Hupman sits in 2nd place with 14 Net Points and is the Leading Girl, she is 8 points back from the leader Thomas Desrochers of Canada.

Adams was in 6th with 25 Net Points, while Lewis is two places back in 8th with 31 Net Points, Rodrigues is in 9th with 32 Net Points and Dias is in 22nd with 67 Net Points.
