Hours Of Video: Labour Day March & Speeches
The annual Labour Day celebrations were held yesterday [Sept 2] with people gathering on Union Square before marching through Hamilton, as they celebrated the 38th anniversary of Labour Day.
The morning started out with BIU President Chris Furbert announcing that the name of labour icon Ottiwell Simmons has been added to the BIU Headquarters building, before the gathered crowd heard speeches from Union and Government leaders before marching through Hamilton.
We have complied all the videos into one article for posterity’s sake, including the video of the speeches from the Banquet which was held on the Friday evening, so the videos below span hours of coverage and show a comprehensive look at the island’s Labour Day celebrations.

Same old crap every year.
Ever since I was a little boy living on Court Street – I used to see Mr. Simmons and the things he did.
I saw him untangle and free a Black man from police brutality on Elliott street. I was about 7 years old.
I have seen him March leading thousands of Bermudian workers to better workers’ rights.
He could not have a mortgage at a local bank – it would have been called-in with all the upheaval that he caused (say the establishment.)
He was not liked by the establishment – but he stayed the course.
I am now almost retirement age and Ottiwell Simmons is “MY HERO””.
I will give Mr Simmons his due all day long but the union leadership today is a shell of itself.0
Bermuda is embarrassed by you Premier Burt. Although, clearly the fun and smiles from Saturday got to you since you couldn’t stop talking about it, you still couldn’t bring yourself to represent ALL the people. I would suggest to the Unions that you not invite ANY political reps to Labour Day speeches. You will get more support. And forget the ‘march’ just enjoy ourselves. Just an idea.
