Endeavour Offers Maritime Springboard Training

Endeavour Community Sailing is partnering with the Bermuda College Division of Professional & Career Education to offer the opportunity for local youth to gain experience and develop skills to better prepare them for entering the maritime workforce.

A spokesperson said, “Endeavour Community Sailing, a non-profit dedicated to engaging Bermuda’s youth in experiential learning through sailing that builds confidence, teamwork and life skills, is partnering with the Bermuda College Division of Professional & Career Education to offer an exciting opportunity for local youth to gain experience and develop skills to better prepare them for entering the maritime workforce.

“The Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme provides a great way for local youth who are interested to work in the maritime industry to gain valuable experience to jump start their career. Key programme objectives are to increase exposure to maritime career pathways and enhance employability skills for local youth to be successful in their goal to achieve a job in the maritime industry.

“The seven week intensive training programme provides Bermudian youth aged 16 and older with the opportunity to obtain internationally recognised qualifications from the Royal Yachting Association [RYA], such as RYA Sailing Level 1,2, RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Seamanship, RYA Marine First Aid, RYA SRC VHF Marine Radio Operators License, RYA Essential Navigation and RYA Dinghy Instructor, and International Certificate of Competence.

“A total of 21 young Bermudians from across our island with a wide range of interests and career goals have benefited from participating in the first two years of the programme. As well as the hands-on training and sailing instruction skills, participants benefit from skills development including teamwork, communication, presentation, problem-solving and decision-making.

“They also improve their resume writing skills, gain exposure to contacts in the maritime industry both locally and abroad through site visits and career days, and learn more about the training and education requirements for various maritime career pathways for their ongoing development.”

Jennifer Pitcher, Community Engagement, Development & Partnerships Manager, said, “Endeavour is honoured to partner with the Bermuda College Division of Professional and Career Education for the Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme.

“The Bermuda College PACE Division team has been instrumental to the programme’s success from promoting the programme, the selection and registration processes to offering participants access to their facilities during the programme. They are fully committed to the success of each participant’s learning journey and we’re excited to continue partnering for the third cohort of participants.”

“Courtney Dublin, a participant in the Endeavour Maritime Careers Springboard Programme, said, “I improved my presentation skills and gained a better understanding of how presentation skills are advantageous both personally and professionally. I also learned there more jobs in the marine industry or marine related than I expected.”

The spokesperson said, “Since completing the programme, Courtney secured employment with Cruise Port Ferry Management Limited as a deckhand, and as a result of his hard work ethic and positive attitude was offered dual role as a junior engineer in training.”

Kristopher Cameron, 16 years old, said, “I have come to understand that the maritime industry is a very broad and the many opportunities for young people.”

The spokesperson said, “Kristopher secured an internship with Spar Yard Marine Solutions Ltd and recently had the opportunity to travel to Maine for maintenance work on the Spirit of Bermuda.”

Benjamin Furqan, 21 years old, said, “My knowledge of the maritime industry has increased a great amount as a result of participating in the Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme.”

The spokesperson said, “Benjamin gained full-time seasonal employment as a Jet Ski tour operator for KS Watersports, and has recently returned to work with the Spirit of Bermuda.”

Ethan Edmunds, 16 years old, said, “I feel very accomplished and satisfied with completing everything.” After completing the programme Ethan gained employment with Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club as a Dinghy Instructor and also works with Ocean Sails as an apprentice sail maker.”

Mrs. Pitcher said, “We’re exceptionally proud of the success of all participants who have completed the Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme. We commend their efforts and enthusiasm for working in the maritime sector along with their tenacity and commitment toward reaching their goals.

“They have accomplished so much already and we wish each of them every success as they continue to work toward their goals. We look forward to welcoming the third cohort of participants for a rewarding learning experience in 2020.”

The spokesperson said, “The 2020 Endeavour Maritime Careers Springboard Programme will take place from Monday to Friday starting January 13th and concluding on February 28th. Spaces are very limited and interested applicants are encouraged to submit a cover letter outlining why they are an ideal candidate for the programme and their resume outlining their skills set via email to info@endeavour.bm by 5pm on November 30th.

“No previous sailing experience is necessary, however to be considered for the programme candidates must be available for the duration of the programme and exhibit a positive attitude, open-mindedness and a strong willingness to learn.”

Karen Smith, Bermuda College PACE Programme Coordinator, said, “Bermuda College is extremely pleased to continue this partnership with Endeavour Community Sailing. Bermuda provides ideal conditions for a programme such as this. It establishes a firm foundation for a promising career in the maritime industry both locally and internationally.

“We encourage anyone who is intrigued by the possibility of a maritime career to come out to the Information Session on Thursday, November 21st at 6pm in the Blue Room [H115] at the Bermuda College.”

2019 Endeavour Maritime Springboard Programme

The spokesperson said, “Candidates who are shortlisted will be invited to interview with a selection panel in early December. Participant costs are approximately $1,200 each, covering certification and course fees, books, administrative fees from the Bermuda College and RYA coach fees for the international assessors. Financial assistance is available on a needs-basis only.”

Moriah Wheddon, Endeavour’s Programme Instructor, said, “There are many reasons to participate in the Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme. It was been incredible to transition from participant in the first year of the programme, to where I am now as a full-time instructor with the Endeavour team.

“I am grateful for this experience to get to teach and I encourage others who may be interested to apply as you never know where it may lead you.”
