Covid-19: Ten New Positives, 288 Total, 63 Active
The confirmed positive cases continues to climb, with the Ministry confirming there have been 10 more positive results — 1 imported, 4 classified as local transmission with known contact and 5 under investigation — so the island now has 63 active cases.
A Government spokesperson said, “There were 1062 test results received by the Ministry of Health yesterday [4 December 2020], and ten were positive for COVID-19.
“One of the new cases is classified as imported with details as follows:
- 1 resident who arrived on DL 617 from New York on 29 November 2020 and tested positive on their day 4 test, having had a negative pre-arrival test and a negative arrival test
Four of the new cases are classified as local transmission with known contact with details as follows:
- 4 residents who were under quarantine as close contacts (1 household, 1 workplace, 2 social) of known cases
“The remaining 5 new cases are classified as under investigation. These cases are among residents with no history of travel or currently identified links to other known cases or clusters
Bermuda now has 288 total confirmed positive cases. Their status is as follows:
- There are 63 active cases, of which
- 61 are under public health monitoring and
- 2 are hospitalized with 1 in critical care;
- A total of 216 have recovered, and
- The total deceased remains 9.
“The average age of all confirmed positive cases is 51 years and the age range is 0 to 101 years. To protect privacy and confidentiality, the average age and age range of the hospitalized cases will not be provided.
“The average age of all deceased cases is 74 years and the age range is 57 to 91 years.
“The source of all cases is as follows:
- 128 are Imported
- 122 are Local transmission, with known contact/source
- 21 are Local transmission with an unknown contact/source, and
- 17 are under investigation
“As investigations proceed, transmission categories may change.
“The seven-day average of our real time reproduction number is greater than 1 (1.08) and Bermuda’s current country status is “Clusters of Cases”.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to advise members of the public of a potential COVID-19 exposure and provide guidance regarding further appropriate action.
“An individual who attended the funeral of Charles Henry Eugene Eberly on Saturday, 28 November 2020 at Malabar has since tested positive for COVID-19.
“We are advising any member of the public who attended this event to call the COVID-19 hotline 444-2498 to arrange COVID-19 testing on Sunday afternoon. In the meantime, we are advising individuals who attended this funeral to quarantine from others outside of their household until they are advised by the Ministry of Health.
“We are issuing this advisory out of an abundance of caution as the most expedient way to contact all those individuals who may have attended the funeral.”
Update: We know people are wondering if the 63 active cases is the highest, and by Bernews calibration [we have been keeping all stats since March on www.BermudaCovid.com] we believe the 63 active cases is one of highest, second only to April 25th, when we had 65 active cases.
However it should be noted that is Bernews calibration, not an official statement and while we have triple checked and do believe it’s correct, we asked the Health Ministry for confirmation and will update as able. And to also mention a nuance, in April the testing capacity was far lower, with approximately 2,300 tests done in total that month. Testing capability is now almost x10 higher, with almost 22,000 tests done in last 30 days.

By this point, I think it’s a balancing act for everyone in Bermuda and we all have a part to play. Everyone needs to do their part with masks, social distancing and hand sanitiser. The Govt will do theirs by trying to catch and contain the virus where and when it appears.
Look at the death line. If you haven’t noticed most folk get over this. It you are old and sick then shield yourself. I haven’t been paid since March. All my money goes into propping up my small business just trying to make it through. How about all you folk that want a lockdown pay into a fund that will support us small hospitality businesses so that we can put food on our tables and maybe buy our children some gifts for Christmas? Thought not. Now shut up and go lock yourself down. Moron!
If the price to pay for letting “small hospitality businesses” run is to let (few) people die and (more than a few) bear permanent health consequences, then my view is that it is a too high price. I like the idea of a fund that subsidizes such small business, it would be a socially responsible thing to do. Some (not me) may object that “small hospitality businesses” have prospered for the past 40 years, without contributing to any social security fund, and a couple of bad (or very bad) years are part of the game plan.

Far as I can tell, these stats are worse than what Bermuda experienced in the Spring.
The current statistics do not show us doing as badly as in the spring, but the increase in reported cases from a few new cases every few days to between 5 and 10 new cases reported in each of the last 5 days is worrying, and should be worrying to everyone in Bermuda.
It suggests people are not taking care the way they should.
Can I please ask to consider abolishing the expression “out of an abundance of caution”? It gets used and abused in every article over Covid, while what I see wherever I walk is just an abundance of irresponsible behaviours. And the results are now clearly visible to everyone.
Stop saying “clusters of cases.” This is clear community spread and people need to adjust accordingly. Also, tourists should not choose to come here thinking they will get a break from Covid.

Not sure what you mean by “daily positive cases”, but if you’re looking for a graph of the number of *new* daily cases over time, just Google for “bermuda coronavirus” – it appears at the top of the search results.
A graph of the number of *active* cases over time would be great though. I think we’ve now almost surpassed the highest number of active cases that we saw in the spring? Maybe that would help people realise what a serious situation we’re now in.

How many tested positive as a result of not wearing a mask. They don’t wanna release those stats or they don’t have a clue is it because it may put doubt in the publics mind and they could lose faith in the governments ability to keep the them safe.

John, look at what is happening overseas. The US and UK politicians are not taking COVID1-9 seriously and look at their numbers.
Taking the statistics on a per capita basis, in the US, you would be 9 times more likely to die from a COVID-19 related virus than if you are in Bermuda. In the UK that number is 8 times more likely to die from a COVID-19 related virus than if you are in Bermuda.
In Canada, where it is hard to enter, the number is 3 times more likely to die from a COVID-19 related virus than if you are in Bermuda.
To suggest that simply wearing a mask, washing hands and social distancing is enough is naive at the least. There is a reason 10 new cases were detected yesterday, only 1 of which was imported.
If you think you are at risk, you should take all the precautions you want. No one is stopping you.
