Zakiya Johnson Lord To Take Part In Panel Today

Bermudian Zakiya Johnson Lord will be part of a panel at 5.00pm Bermuda time today [Jan 28] with the panel aiming to “highlight the LGBTQIA+ community within the Black community.”

The Black Voices LGBTQIA website said, “Join us this Black Heritage Month while we highlight the LGBTQIA+ community within the Black community. During this 60-min event, we will be educating ourselves on the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality. Celebrating our growth, both personally and professionally and mobilizing members and allies around how to support BIPOC within the LGBTQIA+ community both at work and within the world at large.” For more information and reservation please visit here.

Her bio for the event states, “Zakiya proudly hails from the tiny island of Bermuda. She identifies as a Black, lesbian, immigrant parent. Over her 19-year career, Zakiya has led teams of individuals and projects in the nonprofit sector; for private institutions; local governments; as well as for quasi-non-governmental organizations across Alabama, Chicago, Bermuda and New York City.

“Guided by her training, and experiences as a clinical therapist, her work in recent years has centered around the the mobilization of resources to advance LGBTQI rights, through the lens of race and gender, and has included the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. Zakiya is a founding board member of OUTBermuda, and currently serves as their Deputy Director.

“She also serves on BYP100’s inaugural C3 board of directors. Zakiya and her wife live in Brooklyn, where they are raising their 6-year old son—who is Black boy joy, and magic.”
