RA: Order Sent To BELCO To Produce Analysis
The Regulatory Authority said they would like to address what they called the “inaccuracy of BELCO’s recent public statement that a ‘completed report’ regarding the root cause of the island-wide power outage in December 2020 has been submitted to the RA.”
A statement earlier this week from BELCO said “On December 18th 2020, there was an incident which resulted in a loss of electricity to all BELCO customers. A full Root Cause Analysis has been done on the incident and has been presented to the Regulatory Authority [RA].”
An RA spokesperson said, “The Regulatory Authority would like to address the inaccuracy of BELCO’s recent public statement that a ‘completed report’ regarding the root cause of the island-wide power outage on December 18, 2020, has been submitted to the RA.
“The RA can confirm that BELCO submitted a Preliminary Report on February 14, 2021. However, based on communication received from BELCO late yesterday afternoon, [Thursday, March 18, 2021], the root cause analysis of the December power outage is ‘still continuing.’ An Order has been sent to BELCO to produce its final Root Cause Analysis report by March 31, 2021.”
We asked BELCO for comment and will update when able.

Well done RA. It is important to keep the oversight on regulated entities.
It is unacceptable for BELCO to give incorrect statements. It’s is also unacceptable for the extensive delay for a report when the Minister stated he wanted it as a matter of urgency. We need to do better. President Caines need to step up and take accountability
Thats what happens when you’re out of your league. 3 power outages under his watch… incompetent
