Police On Covid-19 Vehicle Checkpoint Protocol
“All residents are encouraged to ensure when travelling on the island’s roads or waterways for any permitted reason, that they carry a valid photo ID,” the police said today.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS], the Royal Bermuda Regiment [RBR], the Bermuda Reserve Police [BRP] and the Bermuda Coast Guard continue to work together across the island conducting compliance checks and safety checks on the roads as well as the water during the Public Health [Covid-19 Emergency Powers] Stay at Home Regulations 2021.
“To assist with these duties, all residents are encouraged to ensure when travelling on the island’s roads or waterways for any permitted reason, that they carry a valid photo ID.
“Additionally, if exempted under the current regulations, please be prepared to show:
- Exemption documentation issued by the Ministry of National Security. Requests for exemptions can be made online here.
- Their official business identification showing that the individual works in a category which is exempted under the regulations, or;
- Documentation from their employer identifying that the individual works in an exempted category.
“Uniformed personnel at vehicle checkpoints will, in the interest of public and personal safety, wear a mask and maintain a safe physical distance during interactions with motorists.
“Drivers of four wheeled vehicles should follow all directions given at the checkpoints. Also, it is recommended to keep the vehicle’s windows up and place any relevant documentation and/or identification against the nearest window. If necessary, the window can be lowered slightly to ease communication.
“Riders of two wheeled vehicles should also follow all directions given at the checkpoints and wear a mask during any interaction with uniformed personnel.
“Let’s all show care and consideration for the frontline workers manning these checkpoints. They are there to ensure the safety of all of us, by reducing the opportunity for Covid-19 to spread.”
