Premier Burt Extends Thoughts To St Vincent

April 8, 2021

[Updated] The Premier has extended his thoughts and prayers to the people of St. Vincent & The Grenadines as they face the possible eruption of the volcano La Soufriere.

St. Vincent has declared a red alert and issued an evacuation order, and the island’s leadership has said that cruise ships are en route to help evacuate people, and emergency shelters are being opened.

Short extract from the St Vincent Government press conference today:

Premier David Burt today said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of St. Vincent & The Grenadines as they face the possible eruption of the volcano La Soufriere.

“The Caricom Family is united in its desire to provide support where necessary and like our Regional partners we continue to hope for the best. I will be making contact with Prime Minister Gonsalves to personally convey these well wishes.”

“La Soufriere last erupted in 1979 and today’s heightened alert comes as a result of increased seismic and volcanic activity. Reports indicate that plans are in place to effect the evacuation of residents in the area of the volcano.

“A number of Bermudian families have ties to St. Vincent & The Grenadines including that of Deputy Premier the Hon. Walter Roban, JP, MP.”

Update April 9, 11.00am: The UWISeismic Research tweeted the photo below, saying, “At 8:41 am this morning 9-4-21 an explosive eruption began at La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent. How odd. I do not recall any such comment from the PLP Government in 2010 when the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland erupted, disrupting air travel across the northern hemisphere and sreckign havoc in Iceland, or even last month when a new fissure opened at the same volcano.

What is different about St. Vincent?

    • Ja says:
