Student Launches Clean Up Doughnut Challenge

Student Isis Tucker recently teamed up with Keep Bermuda Beautiful to launch a cleanup effort  — called the ‘Doughnut Challenge’ –  in which the school class that collected the most trash won a doughnut party.

A spokesperson said, “Isis Tucker, a Year 8 Saltus student, approached Keep Bermuda Beautiful with the idea of inspiring her year group to a cleanup challenge. The class that collected the most trash for Keep Bermuda Beautiful in a ten day period would win a doughnut party.”

“Isis devised some guidelines to make the competition fair and appealed to her peers to join in this fun event during a virtual meeting.”

Katie Berry, KBB’s Executive Director, said, “I am so impressed by Isis and how she chose to reach out to KBB and inspire her peers. The Doughnut Challenge benefitted the environment and the community.

“Litter has negative impacts and by picking up these students showed pride in their community, beautified their neighborhoods and protected wildlife. Isis showed that each person can make a difference.”

The spokesperson said, “Year 8 students at BHS learnt of the Doughnut Challenge and decided to participate in the trash competition, but ultimately Saltus were the 2021 winners with 420 bags of rubbish across the three Year 8 classes.”

Ms. Berry said, “I hope Year 8 classes across the island in all schools will join the Doughnut Challenge next year. It is a great way to make a collective impact.”

The spokesperson said, “KBB would like to thank Miles Markets for providing doughnuts to the winners of this year’s challenge and hopes the winning classes at BHS and Saltus enjoy their Doughnut Parties.”
