Video: ‘Taking Off’ Highlights Beach Cleanup
Skyport has released the latest episode of ‘Taking Off’, a video series with host Mikaela Pearman that highlights the airport, with this episode highlighting the beach cleanup.
Speaking in the episode, Mikaela Pearman said, “As you may be aware, the property surrounding the LF Wade International Airport has a few beaches, and due to their location, they tend to get a bit dirty – that’s where Skyport and its partners step in.
“Recently, Skyport hosted a beach cleanup at one of the beaches near the airfield, which is a major part of Skyport’s environmental commitment as a sustainable organization.
“Staff from Skyport, Works & Engineering and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service came together for two hours to remove as much debris from the beach as possible.
“Waste removed included multiple bags worth of Styrofoam, car parts, ropes, nets and microplastics. The cleanup not only help to protect the airfield, but also the local flora and fauna.
“Removing microplastics was especially important as they can be mistaken as food and ingested by corals, phytoplanktons, zooplanktons, sea urchins, lobsters, fish etc.
“Additional beach clean ups will be scheduled for subsequent dates as we do our best to protect the environment.”
