San Marino Becomes Smallest Nation To Medal

July 29, 2021

Bermuda has passed the torch, so to speak, to San Marino who are now the smallest nation in the world to ever win a medal at the Olympic Summer Games, with Alessandra Perilli claiming the bronze medal in the women’s trap shooting final giving her country of only 33,000 people, their first medal.

Bermuda had held the distinction of being the smallest nation to medal at a Summer Olympics for 45 years, thanks to boxer Clarence Hill, who won a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympic Games.

However, in what could be seen as notable timing, just days before we ‘passed the torch’ to San Marino, Bermuda earned a new distinction, becoming the smallest nation to ever win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics, with triathlete Flora Duffy recording a massive win to claim the gold medal.

San Marino — the 3rd smallest nation in the world — is likely in full celebration mode, joining Bermuda in celebrating their international medal win.
