Emancipation Creativity Competition Winners
Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr Ernest Peets congratulated Alay Burgess Rocker, Callahj Simons and Riley Darrell, who were the first, second and third place winners of the Emancipation Youth Creativity Competition, which was held earlier this month.
“Those who participated in the contest were asked to submit poems, WhatsApp or YouTube videos, and any other artwork or creative expression under the theme of “How have my ancestors made me strong?”.
For her first place win, Alay, a 13-year-old Dellwood Middle School student won a $100 gift certificate after she submitted a creative video entitled “The Backbone of My Being”.
Callahj Simons another 12-year-old Dellwood Middle School student, also submitted a video and was awarded second place and a $75 gift certificate for her efforts.
Third place winner Riley Darrell, a 13-year-old student from Clearwater Middle School submitted a poem and was presented with a $25 gift certificate. Students Mataio Cameron and K’ah Seymour both received honorable mention for their submissions and received $25 gifts certificates each.
In presenting the awards to the students, Minister Peets said, “We’re pleased that our young people could engage in this activity which highlights the importance of understanding Emancipation as part of Bermuda’s history. I was impressed and pleased with the submissions shared, and on behalf of the Ministry, I want to commend all of our young people who entered the contest.”
