Video: Triathlete Flora Duffy On Future Plans
Olympic gold medalist Flora Duffy discussed her future plans, saying that while it’s still too soon to say about the next Olympics, before these Games she “was 100% no to Paris and now I’m less 100% no to Paris.”
The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024.
The multiple time world champion also indicated she may be open to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and even a team relay, saying that in 2018, the “mixed team relay was a lot of fun, so hopefully we can repeat that in 2022 next year and maybe build off that and get a team qualified for the Olympics in 2024, which would be amazing.”
Extract from the BNV Interview with Ms Duffy discussing her future plans:
Flora Duffy told Bernews that before the Olympics, she was talking about maybe retiring from the short course and going more into 70.3, but a couple of things have changed — winning the Olympics and the fact that last year she did not get to race much due to Covid.
“So I feel like I still have more to give to the short-course racing. I’m still really enjoying it. So, I don’t know. I’ll have to see. It’s still too soon to say, but definitely before Tokyo, it’s 100% no to Paris and now I’m less 100% no to Paris.” she said.
The topic of the 2018 Commonwealth Games — where Ms Duffy won a gold medal and Bermuda’s triathlon relay team of Flora Duffy, Erica Hawley, Tyler Butterfield and Tyler Smith finished 5th — came up, with it suggested Ms Duffy compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Ms Duffy’s win was the pinnacle of excellence in world triathlon, and escalated a trend, as in addition to all her prior world championship wins, comparative to our small size, Bermuda actually has a deep well of talent in triathlon.
Tyler Butterfield has made multiple Olympic appearances for Bermuda, and we have two additional elite triathletes competing on the world stage, and the newly crowned Olympic champion had words of praise for the island’s elite triathletes.
Flora Duffy said, “I actually saw Tyler Butterfield last night, which is a very emotional moment. I cried so much seeing him and hearing about him watching the race and thoughts and everything.
“2018 Commonwealth Games having Tyler Smith, Tyler Butterfield, and Erica Hawley there was just so fun, and I just really loved that experience.
“Of course, racing the mixed team relay was a lot of fun, so hopefully we can repeat that in 2022 next year and maybe build off that and get a team qualified for the Olympics in 2024, which would be amazing.”
