September 22, 2021

Recent graduates from Saltus Grammar School are celebrating their success on the Advanced Placement [AP] examinations that were completed in May and June of this year.

A spokesperson said, “Despite the impact that Covid-19 has had on educational institutions around the world, the recent graduates from Saltus are celebrating their success on the Advanced Placement examinations that were completed in May/June of this year.

“AP Exams, administered by the College Board, were among the only international exams offered, to be taken in person, to students in Bermuda last year as a result of the COVID pandemic.

“AP is an internationally recognised programme offering college-level curricula and examinations to high school students, enabling them to potentially secure placement and course credit at universities around the world.”

James Anthony, Director of Senior School, said, “Saltus is pleased to announce the results of the Advanced Placement [AP] examinations offered to its students,” said . “This year’s AP results were a remarkable performance in such difficult times.”

The spokesperson said, “Seventy-seven students took a total of 170 of the high-level subject-based examinations, including a large number of SGY1 students who are not set to graduate from Saltus until June 2022.”

“Seventy-one percent of the students who took an exam scored a 3 or higher [5 is the highest score]. A score of 3 is typically standard acceptance level as a subject credit in North American universities. This year, globally, 3.4 million exams were taken. Saltus students ranked twelve percent higher than the global average for scores 3-5.

“The average percentage of global students with a score of 3 or higher was fifty-nine percent.

“To highlight their success and commitment to academic excellence, 22 Saltus students were recognised by the College Board for outstanding results:

  • AP Scholar designation is awarded to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams: eight students were awarded this designation,
  • AP Scholar with Honor designation is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on 4 or more AP exams: five students were awarded this designation,
  • AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams: nine students were awarded this designation.

“Two students, Ywione Darrell and Sanna Vogler, were also awarded the AP International Diploma. This is the top award from College Board for which students must score 3 or higher on 5 or more AP exams. These must include an AP Englishexam; an AP world language exam; an AP offering a global perspective; an exam from either the sciences or math and computer sciencecurriculum; and at least one additional exam.

“Head of School, Deryn Lavell, commended Ywione and Sanna for their outstanding achievements, offering her congratulations as well best wishes on their future endeavours. She also offered her congratulations to all the students and their teachers for another exemplary set of AP results.”

Ms. Lavell said, “Qualifying AP Exam scores are recognised for university acceptance in over 100 other countries worldwide. All of the Saltus students who successfully navigated this challenging curriculum and completed their exams should be proud of their accomplishments on the global stage.”
