Civil Aviation Authority Celebrates Five Years
Today the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority [BCAA] celebrates five years as an Authority. On 1st October 2016, Bermuda’s former Department of Civil Aviation [DCA] completed its transition from a Government run department to a semi-autonomous administration.
Director General Thomas Dunstan said, “The Government of Bermuda’s decision to transition the Civil Aviation function to an Authority was made to ensure that, as regulators, we have the autonomy to be more efficient and service our clients to the best of our ability.
“Since the transition, we have been able to grow the team to increase productivity and enhance customer satisfaction. Additionally, we have broadened our global presence by opening new offices in Farnborough [UK] and in Shanghai [China].
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire BCAA team and its Board members for all of their hard work and individual contributions to the successful transition in becoming an authority, which was no easy feat.”
The BCAA added, “Over the last five years, the BCAA has been focusing on strengthening the position of the Bermuda Aircraft Registry by increasing the total number of private and commercial aircraft on the Registry.
“It is currently the world’s largest offshore registry, and ranked 10th in size when compared to 193 signatory states on the Chicago Convention. With growth as a focus, this year the BCAA create a focused Business Development team to develop a seamless customer experience and sustainable growth in the global aviation market.
“In May of 2019, BCAA was awarded an outstanding overall score of 95.2% during a safety oversight audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO]. This was an exceptional achievement and solidified Bermuda’s excellent global reputation.
The Minister of Transport Lawrence Scot commented, “With an excellent global reputation for safety and regulation, the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority has continuously promoted Bermuda in an excellent light. The Bermuda Aircraft Registry continues to be a major economic pillar for Bermuda and the Government congratulates the efforts of the whole team at BCAA for their achievements to date.”
“The BCAA has also been steadily increasing its presence at industry events around the world, with a focus on increasing its customer base in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The growth of the Registry, especially in recent times, is a testament to the hard work that has been happening behind the scenes,” a spokesperson added.
“Since the start of the pandemic, the BCAA has focused on continuing to meet its obligations to international standards. The restrictions to travel have been challenging, but BCAA implemented new protocols quickly and efficiently to ensure that customers did not feel the effect of the pandemic to their registration process.”
Chairman of the Board, Kim Wilkerson, says, “The last year and a half has been a very difficult time for the aviation industry, and the team has done well in adapting to a new way of working, continuing oversight responsibilities and servicing clients in a timely manner. The team has been resilient and by sticking to our vision and values we have navigated these turbulent times.”
