BUEI Launches Youth Climate Cinema
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is launching the Youth Climate Cinema, a special selection of free films that will be shown every weekend over the month of October.
A spokesperson said, “In the leadup to the Youth Climate Summit, BUEI is launching Youth Climate Cinema, a special selection of free films that will be shown every weekend over the month of October.
“Beginning this Saturday, October 9th and continuing through month-end, films focusing on either sustainability, conservation or climate justice will be shown in one-hour blocks on the big screen in our theatre. Following on from last weekend’s premier of ‘Youth Unstoppable,’ Youth Climate Cinema is intended to foster awareness and dialogue among young people and within the community at large.
A BUEI spokesperson said “We are excited to introduce the Youth Climate Cinema series to the local public. Because of Bermuda’s size, we can make changes that can significantly improve our ability to withstand some of the impacts that are out of our control.”
“The series features films from four categories: ‘Fast Fashion’, ‘The Ocean Around Us’, ‘Wildlife Warriors’, and ‘Climate Justice’.
‘Fast Fashion’ addresses the issue of sustainable manufacturing, while ‘The Ocean Around Us’ includes the Inuit fable “Mother of The Sea”. ‘Wildlife Warriors’ focuses on endemic species forcibly adapting to their rapidly shifting habitats, and ‘Climate Justice’ highlights why giving voice to those most impacted by climate change is imperative to developing sustainable solutions.
“Film screenings will run in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium at 12pm and 3pm each Saturday, and 3pm each Sunday from October 9th until October 30th. Each film block lasts for an hour or less and has 4 – 8 films showing within that timeframe. Every film category will show at least twice to maximize public outreach.
The BUEI spokesperson added, “Being able to show a variety of films means there should be something interesting for everyone. We want young people to know that they don’t have to be an expert in everything to do something that matters. If they find what they’re passionate in and focus on that area, when we come together, we can create a fantastic mosaic of climate change initiatives!”
“There are 50 seats available per screening, with priority access being granted to students aged 13-22 and their guests.
