Minister: ‘Landfilling At Marsh Folly Will End’

Acting Minister of Public Works Wayne Furbert confirmed that “landfilling at Marsh Folly will end following a successful weekend’s trial of the repaired Unit at Tynes Bay.”

The Minister said: “The single burner, which was returned to service last week continued to operate this weekend without any mechanical issues. This news means refuse collected can now be transported to the Tynes Bay facility and not to Marsh Folly.”

A Government spokesman confirmed that the burner is “operating at near normal efficiency which represents a burn rate of approximately 150 tonnes of garbage per day and that the baler, which returned to service last week, is currently processing approximately 105 tonnes per day in an effort to ensure that the tipping hall has sufficient space to receive the trash trucks dropping off residential waste.”

Minister Furbert continued: “To be clear, we are not out of the woods yet. There is constant monitoring taking place to extend the life of the current infrastructure at Tynes Bay while work is ongoing on a more long term solution.

“We want to assure the public and area residents that our resources are focused on resuming normal operations. In the coming days we will provide a further update on the state of the second burner which engineers are hoping to have back on line in the coming weeks.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the entire team at Tynes Bay, Marsh Folly and at the Department of Waste Management for all of their hard work and dedication not just this past weekend, but throughout the entire process of getting our plant operational.”
