Minister Walter Roban’s Trip Cost $9,033.43
A trip in October 2021 by Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference “COP 26″ in Scotland cost $9,033.43, according to a recent listing on the Government’s travel webpage.
This marks the first time the official Government Minister travel cost website has been updated since March 2020, as that was when the airport closed to commercial flights and worldwide travel began to substantially decline due to the pandemic.
The trip duration was listed as from October 31, 2021 – November 13, 2021, and the web page listing said, “Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Walter H. Roban, JP, MP attended the ‘COP26’ conference [which is short for the Conference of the Parties] held at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, Scotland as the representative on behalf of Bermuda.
“Bermuda’s participation was facilitated through the assistance of the Bermuda Government London Office and Government House.
“The conference was hosted and organised by the United Kingdom and Italy which brought parties together to accelerate the action towards the goal of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Almost 200 countries were represented which included Government representatives, country leaders, negotiators and others who arrived for 14 days of talks.
“These talks centred around countries working together to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees, the aim was 1.5 degrees, to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.
“The commitment to aim for 1.5 degrees is important because every fraction of a degree of warming will result in the loss of many more lives and livelihoods being damaged.
“‘COP26’ concluded in Glasgow with all countries agreeing the Glasgow Climate Pact to keep 1.5C alive and finalise the outstanding elements of the Paris Agreement.”
