Karting: Scott Barnes Claims Wins In Florida
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Scott Barnes enjoyed a near-perfect weekend in the opening two rounds of the Skusa Winter Series at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex in Florida.
The island’s top karting driver came close to a clean sweep of wins on both days of competition but suffered engine problems in the final race of round one on Saturday and was unable to finish.
He did win the heat races in rounds one and two and finished the weekend in style by claiming the chequered flag in the final race on Sunday.
Barnes, who was competing in the Shifter Masters class, also picked up bonus points with the fastest lap times on both days.
The series concludes with rounds three and four at the same venue, which will run from February 11 to 13.
“I pretty much swept the weekend,” Barnes told Bernews. “The competition wasn’t as great as we were hoping for, as there were only four drivers in my class. There were eight or nine signed up, but a bunch of them got Covid. Next month there will be a lot more in my class.
“Overall, I’m happy. We got a strong lead and are in command going into rounds three and four.
“We’re shooting for podiums and wins and want to get that championship wrapped up.”
Local drivers Brian Bulhoes and Blake Horseman also raced in the KA 100 and X30 Tag categories, respectively.
“The two Bermudian boys had rough weekends statistically, but they did well and had stacked fields in their respective classes,” added Barnes, who placed second overall last year. “I’m proud of them.”
