Public Health Emergency Order Notice Posted

January 18, 2022

The notice saying the Public Health [Covid-19] Emergency Order has been extended for 30 days — until February 27th — has been posted online, having passed in the House last month.

The document — which has an operative date of today — said, “The Public Health [Covid-19] Emergency Order 2021 is extended for 30 days. Accordingly, in paragraph 3[2] of that Order, delete ’28 January 2022′ and substitute ’27 February 2022.’

The 30 day extension is a change from previous extensions, which were generally for 60 days. If wondering, this does not per se mean regulations like the curfew are extended [it could or could not be, Government has not yet announced], this Order is basically the overarching regulation so to speak, and it has been extended multiple times now, normally for 60 days, the official notice of this one was posted today.

Update 9.38pm:  A spokesperson said, “The Government advised this evening that the Public Health (Covid-19) Emergency Order, which was passed in the House of Assembly on December 10, 2021, has been posted online in the Official Gazette. The Order can be found here.

“Simply put, the Order extends the existing Public Health Emergency for 30 days [from January 28, 2022 - February 27, 2022] and allows the Legislature to return to assess if any further public health regulations should be extended.

“This is not unusual, and this extension order represents the seventh such extension. As a note, Government also advised that earlier today the Cabinet reviewed the current Public Health Regulations which came into effect on December 23 and were to be reviewed after four weeks.

“Tomorrow, the Minister of Health will share details of any revisions made and the duration that they will be in effect.”

  1. Ringmaster says:

Why? This foolishness has to stop and any restrictions brought to the HoA and each one debated in the normal way. Where is the outcry from the Opposition? PLP backbenchers also need to be vocal but of course they won’t and will stay muzzled.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

I’m sorry, are you suggesting that all health restrictions intended to arrest the spread of COVID-19 should be abolished and that life in Bermuda should go back to the way it was in 2019?

      • Question says:

It’s omicron. It’s about as dangerous as flu. We should put in place all the restrictions we have in place when there is flu about. I.e. none.

  2. Question says:

This is outrageous. There is no longer any reason to have restrictions. They were supposed to be temporary.

  3. sandgrownan says:

Without a vaccine mandate, everything else is window dressing.

  4. Hmmm says:

How is it “not unusual” for the government to declare an emergency where none exists in order to restrict the constitutional rights of the people?

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Are you suggesting that the COVID-19 pandemic does not exist and that in excess of 5.5 million people have not died from COVID-19 in the last 2 years?

      • Question says:

You appear unaware of the fact that we’re now dealing solely with a variant called omicron, which though easily caught, is not serious. In the UK, the deaths in the last month or so are exactly as in a normal year prior to covid, despite millions of people having tested positive with the omicron variant. It is less life-threatening than flu.

        • sandgrownan says:

Not true. In Bermuda, 50% of cases are Delta. Two more deaths today.

Your statement regarding UK cases is incorrect. 313 deaths within 28 days of testing positive. While the 7 day average is falling, and it looks like they may be on the backside of the surge, don’t let any fireworks off yet.
