BELCO Hosts Second Valentine’s Day Food Drive

February 18, 2022

BELCO held their second Valentine’s Day Food Drive this past Sunday [Feb 13] with the employee-led initiative offering over 1,000 bags of food and supplies to assist families across the island.

A spokesperson said, “At the beginning of 2021, BELCO employees started donating non-perishable food items for those in need in the community, which pushed the company to advance the initiative on a larger scale. Valentine’s Day 2021 marked the first food drive with the intent to simply expand on the initiative started by employees.

“As Bermuda continues to be affected by the economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, employees from BELCO decided to offer the same community assistance once again. The goal was and remains to be good stewards of the community and assist our fellow Bermudians.

“With the initial food drive in 2021 providing over 700 bags of food to community members in need, the 2022 food drive was expanded on greatly to offer the community over 1,000 bags of food and supplies to assist families across the island. The employees saw a need and wanted to help.

Krista Barnes, Director of Communications & Sustainability said: “While this initiative falls directly in line with our social sustainability goals, it was not designed for that purpose. This initiative is entirely led by employees – born out of their desire to assist the community in a time of identified need.

“I am personally extremely proud to work for a team that is this generous and this in-tune with the needs of the community within which we operate. BELCO employees have always been actively involved in charitable initiatives and we look forward to continuing our community involvement initiatives throughout 2022.”

The company noted, “The BELCO Valentine’s Food Drive is only one of the company’s planned and executed community initiatives. The Food Drive follows BELCO employees assisting KBB for a trash cleanup in November 2021, Meals on Wheels in December 2021, and WindReach in December 2021.

“Employees have also planned to assist Habitats for Humanity later this month and the Audubon Society next month. These volunteering initiatives are in addition to BELCO employee monthly fund-raising initiatives where they donate to support various charities around the island. Recently, employees have donated to the Women’s Resource Centre, the Foster Parent Association, the Bermuda Diabetes Association and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “Bermudian families continue to struggle given the ongoing COVID pandemic and our staff wanted to repeat the successful food drive we held last year for Valentine’s Day. Our staff generously volunteered to pack hampers and distribute them to those in need. I’m proud of our team who are committed to our Company’s long history of giving back to the community and we look forward to continuing that support going forward.”
