Jeffrey Lindo Wins Again…Over 50 Years Later
The Bermuda PGA held an event at Five Forts Golf Course, with three players tying for the win, including 68-year-old Jeffrey Lindo – who won his first tournament over 50 years ago, back in 1969.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda PGA held its first event for 2022 at Five Forts Golf Course on Monday, February 7th, and the story of the day came from one the oldest player in the field.
“On a rainy and windy day experience and local knowledge seemed to be the common thread that dominated the leaderboard. A three way tie between veteran Jeffrey Lindo, Chaka Desilva and OJ Pitcher meant the trio shared the spoils, performance points and glory. But there was no concealing the pride and jubilation being expressed by Jeffrey Lindo playing against golfers half his age.
“Sixty-eight year old Jeffrey Lindo, playing from the same tees as his youthful competitors, turned back the hands of time, by being in the winning Trio with Chaka DeSilva & OJ Pitcher becomes the oldest winner of a Bermuda PGA Monthly Medal.
“DeSilva and Pitcher both have had previous experience on the St. George’s layout that contains many of the former routing can be considered hometown players.
“Years from now, Jeffrey Lindo will be tell the story of riding his bike to St. George’s to claim the first victory of the year and lead the points standings.
“With this result, Jeffrey Lindo became the first local player to win a top class Bermuda golf event in golf events in as many decades – as a 16-year-old winning the Col. Clarke Mid Ocean Junior Championship in 1969 and the 1971 ZBM Trophy for low player under 21 in the Bermuda Open at Port Royal along with many other wins throughout the years in a life full of challenges.
“The result is a personal triumph for OJ Pitcher – battling injuries – who is a former Bermuda Junior Golf Champion, who returned to golf after an outstanding local and international career in cricket where he was a former Bermuda national team captain.
“Chaka Desilva, the former Bermuda PGA Champion, continues the good form that catapulted him through the local qualifying tournament to participate on the PGA Tour Bermuda Championship last fall.
“The Five Forts event was a tune up for many ahead of the Bermuda PGA Championship at Tuckers Point February 14, 15 & 16, 2022.”
“Five Forts Golf Course”
I obviously missed the public announcement when St/ George’s Golf Course was re-named “Five Forts Golf Course”.
I also missed the public announcement when St. George’s Golf Course (or “Five Forts Golf Course”) was taken away from the public and given to Marriott Corporation (along with St. Catherine’s beach) for the St. Regis Hotel.
