Dr. Douglas To Moderate Talk With Dr. Edwards

Bermudian Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas, who serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice at the University Of California Berkeley, will moderate a conversation today [March 1] with scholar, author and activist Dr. Harry Edwards, with the event available to watch via Zoom from 4.00pm to 5.00pm local time.

A spokesperson said, “Dr. Ty Douglas will moderate a conversation with renowned scholar, author and activist, Dr. Harry Edwards. Dr. Edwards is a pioneer of the field of sociology of sport who has worked with the likes of Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jim Brown, Colin Kaepernick and LeBron James.

“He is known as ‘the architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which led to the Black Power Salute protest by two African-American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, both San José State University athletes, at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.’

“The event, which will be on March 1 from 4.00pm to 5.00pm Bermuda time, is available to the Bermudian public by registering on this link.

“Last week, Dr. Douglas also moderated a panel that included Dallas Mavericks CEO and UC Berkeley alumna Cynt Marshall. Cynt was the first Black cheerleader at UC Berkeley/Cal. She went on to a successful career at AT&T before assuming her role with the Mavericks. According to Wikipedia, ‘In February 2018, Marshall became the first black female CEO of the National Basketball Association.’

“Dr. Douglas serves as the inaugural Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice [DEIBJ]. The word ‘Justice’ was added to his title and office on February 1st of this year.”
