‘Vessel’s Anchor Has Become Stuck In The Reef’
At around 1am this morning [March 8] a vessel was observed approaching St. George’s Harbour when it took a “sharp turn” and came to an “abrupt stop,” so the Coast Guard checked on the vessel given the “unusual maneuvering” and it was discovered that their anchor was “stuck in the reef” and it was agreed to leave the vessel until daylight “when the situation can be more easily assessed .”
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Tuesday 8th March, 01:23 am – Sailing yacht Gedel observed on radar and AIS approaching St. George’s Harbour from sea.
“Attempts at VHF radio communication with the yacht by Bermuda Radio have so far been unsuccessful. Vessel is noted to take a sharp turn from Spit Buoy towards the shallow waters east of Paget Island where she comes to an abrupt stop approximately 0.15 NM East of the island.
“A Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard vessel is tasked to check on the vessel given the lack of communication and unusual maneuvering. Vessel is subsequently found by RBR CG safely at anchor with 2 persons onboard.
“Coast Guard are directed to escort the vessel to the Customs Yacht Reporting Centre dock, however the vessel’s anchor has become stuck in the reef. It is agreed to leave the vessel at anchor monitored by Bermuda Radio until daylight when the situation can be more easily assessed and the anchor hopefully freed to permit the yacht to proceed to Customs.”
