Earth Day 2022 To Be Observed On Friday

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI], Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB], Greenrock, and the Bermuda National Trust are offering their thoughts on Earth Day 2022, which is set to be observed on Friday [April 22].

We at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute are excited to be collaborating with Greenrock and other local environmental NGOs for this year’s Earth Day Challenge. Aligning BUEI’s vision, this is a fun way for us to better understand our natural environment whilst committing to actions that can help protect it.

KBB Earth Day 2022 Statement

My name is Traci Burgess and I am the Executive Director of KBB – Keep Bermuda Beautiful. KBB’s everyday mission is to engage individuals to take greater responsibility in reducing waste; eliminating litter; and beautifying Bermuda through action and education. Community partnerships are a guiding principle for KBB and we are happy to be collaborating with other environmental non-profits and hundreds of volunteers for this year’s Earth Day celebrations on April 22.

As part of the 2022 Earth Day Challenge call to action, KBB will be cleaning up at 22 different locations across the island this week. The clean-ups involve partnerships with eight corporate groups and 14 schools, both public and private, and include more than 600 volunteers ranging in age from 4 years old and up. Greenrock Earth Day 2022 Statement

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. In the decades leading up to the first Earth Day, people all around the world, primarily in developed nations, were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Industries deemed to be progressive and innovative at the time belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of consequences from the law, public scrutiny, or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, most people remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how polluted environments threaten human health.

By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of other first of their kind environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act. Two years later Congress passed the Clean Water Act. A year after that, Congress passed the Endangered Species Act and, soon after, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws have protected millions of men, women, and children from disease and death and have protected hundreds of species from extinction.

For this reason, we see immense value in the acknowledgment of Earth Day annually. Although much progress has been made since its inception 52 years ago, there is still a considerable amount of work left for us all to do. Therefore, we are very proud to announce the fact that this year we are a part of a collaborative initiative including seven environmental organizations who have agreed to work together to bring the Earth Day Challenge to our local community and interested people around the world. Those organizations are as follows:

• Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute
• Beyond Plastic Bermuda
• Greenrock
• Keep Bermuda Beautiful

The Earth Day Challenge is an opportunity for everyone, regardless of age, to engage in some form of environmental action. The initiative includes a list of 13 challenges including actions that involve things like energy conservation, planting trees, spending time in nature, starting a plant-based diet, and picking up waste.

As a participant in the challenge, you can commit to as many environmental actions as possible. Then, as you celebrate Earth Day this Friday, April 22, take pictures and share everything you do. Use the hashtag #earthdaybda when you post on social media and we will all share your environmental actions via our channels. BNT Earth Day 2022 Statement

Mother Earth should be celebrated every day, but Earth Day every April 22nd gives us a special opportunity to stop and put things in check. It gives us a chance to ask ‘am I treating our Earth right? Can I do more?’ So, while it’s time to celebrate, it’s also a time of reflection and action. Indeed, everyday is a precious opportunity to act.

The impacts of the climate crisis are here and require us all to take action to solve the global environmental emergency and protect our natural and cultural heritage. Just as individuals can make a greater impact together, our organizational partnerships allow us to better protect our health, families, livelihoods, and island home.

As has been said by many before, we need to act boldly, innovate broadly, and implement equitably. The Earth Day Challenge provides just such an opportunity and we at the Bermuda National Trust hope everyone will play their part by completing at least one, but hopefully more, of the proposed actions on Earth Day 2022. From there, we can create habits year-round that are kinder to the earth. Together, our collective habits can make all the difference to protecting our planet.
