Photos & Video: “Bikes Up, Guns Down” Event

May 21, 2022

“We would rather have the kids pick up bikes than guns” was the message as the ‘Bikes Up, Guns Down’ community day event was held this afternoon [May 21] at Southampton Rangers Sports Club, with the event featuring food, music, fun castles, bike displays and more.

The ‘Bikes Up, Guns Down’ event, organised by the Give Back Foundation, hopes to help curb the growing incidents of violence on the island while also promoting the positive impact of motocross.

Makinday Johansen, who co-founded the Give Back Foundation with Dion Smith, previously told Bernews, “There is a lot of gun violence right now. We felt like we needed to do something positive for the kids and give back to the community. We also want to show motocross in a positive light, so we came up with ‘Bikes Up, Guns Down.”

“Southampton Rangers often gets painted in a negative light, and people don’t see the positive things the club does for the community,” he said. “It’s important to focus on the positives.”

This is a joke smh! When they go down Clearwater on an open flat area they are told it’s illegal. There are literally bike groups all over bermuda and every time they get together they get shut down, especially if they are young. Hence why the bikes were on display and not being rode on. Another mixed message for the youth, who also have no youth centers or after school programs of any kind.

There are DESIGNATED (read: legal) areas for off road bikes and the public streets for the rest of the licensed and insured vehicles that have to obey the rules of the road (although that’s becoming a rarity).
      And your problems is ?

      • Dejavu says:

Actually there’s no designated free areas for any motorbike riding. Also how do you call an event bikes up and all they were was on display. So my point is in what ridiculous world do you people live, that you think putting motorbikes on display will stop gang violence smh. How many people have been murdered at rangers? Yet the owners still are open for business and eating off of the public. If you think selling a plate of food and 5 yr Olds bouncing around is helping save lives you people are a joke

I passed by and the adults were giving all the little ones rides around the grass area, safely and slowly.I do get what you are saying about Clearwater but they never used to mess with guys in that parking area even when they had 600′s and scramblers out there a few years back, guys were respectful and cautious of others using the spot and left no trash. I have seen guys out there this year doing their thing, no problems.

Congrats. History will record that tou stepped up at the right time to show leadership. Add discipline and respect and we will lay a better foundation for our clubs and families. You can do it.
