Sandys Rotary Donates To Sloop Foundation
The Sandys Rotary Club has donated $15,000 to the Bermuda Sloop Foundation to support bursaries for the upcoming voyage to the Turks & Caicos Islands, which is entitled “In the Wake of Mary Prince.”
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Sloop Foundation is very grateful to the Sandys Rotary Club’s generous donation of $15,000 to support bursaries for the upcoming voyage to the Turks & Caicos Islands entitled ‘In the Wake of Mary Prince.’ The Spirit of Bermuda will depart Bermuda on July 2nd with 10 Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Silver candidates, as well as 7 other high school students ages 15-17.
“The expedition is a Sail Training voyage which develops discipline, teamwork, and resilience. The historical connections between Turks and Caicos with Bermuda is to be followed through the experience of the well-known Mary Prince.
“Developing and delivering this unique curriculum for the journey is noted Bermudian author and lecturer Dr. Theodore Francis, Assistant Professor of History at Huston-Tillotson University. Dr. Francis intends to facilitate a ‘better appreciation of the regional and global dimensions of Prince’s life and legacy.’
Commenting on the gift from Sandys Rotary Club, Robin Hamill, CEO of Bermuda Sloop Foundation, said “We are very happy that Sandys Rotary Club has supported this important initiative. We are grateful for their generosity in recognizing the significance of voyages such as this. We trust the student trainees will return home to Bermuda with a renewed sense of purpose. “
Speaking on behalf of Sandys Rotary, Community Services Director, Barry Shailer, echoed the words of club President Allan Trew that the Club is “delighted to be able to support the efforts of the Sloop Foundation to provide life enhancing experiences for young Bermudians. Opportunities to face challenges and achieve personal growth are foundational towards youth development. The voyages of The Spirit of Bermuda provide such precious experiences.”
