Students Return From Voyage To Turks & Caicos

July 17, 2022

On Friday, the student sailors who travelled to the Turks & Caicos as part of a Mary Prince learning expedition, returned to Bermuda and received a warm welcome by family and well-wishers.

The Spirit of Bermuda sailed to the Caribbean island earlier this month as part of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s special summer interactive learning voyage.

Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. Ernest Peets said, “We’re so pleased to welcome back our young students who I’m certain had an incredible experience. I followed their progress online and I look forward to hearing more about their voyage.”

The Minister continued, “As I shared prior to their journey, sail training is a powerful transformative learning platform which has been shown to have a unique impact on the lives of our young people. The Spirit of Bermuda, is a replica of an historic Bermuda sloop, and I’m sure it provided an excellent backdrop for their onboard learning of our National Hero, Mary Prince.”

Bermudian scholar and historian, Dr. Theodore Francis II, served as the onboard educator, and with the support of the Department of Culture, Minister Peets presented the Foundation with $7,000 to aid the journey.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s education programme was entitled “In the Wake of Mary Prince”, and the training expedition was part of a partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Programme.
