“Bermuda Is A Better Place Due To Her Work”
[Updated] The Progressive Labour Party [PLP] paid tribute to the late Olga Scott, noting her legacy of service to our community and saying that “Bermuda is a better place due to her work.”
A spokesperson said, “The Progressive Labour Party is deeply saddened by the passing of Mrs. Olga Scott, OBE, wife of former Premier & Party Leader W. Alexander Scott, CBE.
“Mrs. Scott, who hailed from Jamaica, made Bermuda her home for over 50 years. As the wife of a politician, she could have easily stood on the sidelines and simply played a supporting role. But, while a staunch supporter of her husband, she also was formidable in her own right.
“As a trained social worker, she was responsible for the establishment of Teen Services. This organization helped many young women to continue pushing on in the face of challenges during their teen years. Without Mrs. Scott as an advocate, many would likely have had lesser outcomes.
“Mrs. Scott’s relationship with the PLP took an even greater role when her husband, W. Alexander Scott, ascended to the Leadership of the Party in 2003.
“During his 3 years as Party Leader & Premier, Mrs. Scott supported her husband in his leadership capacities, providing sound counsel and advice. She was a mentor to the women of the PLP and one of immense strength, elegance and resolve.
“She has always been a doting mother and then grandmother to Robyn and her 2 children. In more recent years since her husband’s retirement, she has supported her son Lawrence in his political career as the MP for Warwick South East and more recently as the Minister of Transport.
“We, in the Progressive Labour Party, will miss Mrs. Olga Scott, and everything she brought to our great Party. Her legacy of service to our community is sound. Bermuda is a better place due to her work, and we honour her for her contributions.
“To our former Party Leader & Premier, Mr. W. Alexander Scott, our thoughts are with you during this most difficult time, as you mourn your wife. To her daughter, Robyn, son-in-law, Deon, and grandchildren, we extend our condolences to you as well during this time of loss.
“And to our current Member of Parliament and Minister of Transport, the Hon. Lawrence Scott, JP, MP, we grieve along with you. We pray you all will find comfort in the memories of your wife, mother and grandmother.”
Update 4.28pm: Former Premier Dr. Ewart Brown said, “Wanda and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Olga Scott, wife of my friend and colleague Alex Scott.
“Olga, who hailed originally from Jamaica, was a tower of strength. Bermuda was fortunate to have her during a time she was willing to share her vision with us. Teen Services would not have existed without the dedication and persistence of Olga Scott. She was politically astute and possessed an uncanny ability to understand human behaviour.
“We have been in contact with former Premier Scott and have expressed our warmest condolences on the loss of his wonderful wife, mother of his children, Robin and Lawrence and his best friend. May they find peace in the days ahead.”
